‼️Trigger Warning: Medical trauma, pregnancy complications, and blood.‼️
Before the month of May ends, I want to take a moment to acknowledge that May is both Preeclampsia Awareness Month and Mental Health Awareness Month.
I am a preeclampsia survivor.
At the very end of my pregnancy with my son, I had to undergo a medically induced labor after weeks of knowing something was wrong. The second photo is a picture I took of my foot about two to three weeks before I was finally admitted into the hospital. Night after night, I experienced blinding migraines, vomiting, and symptoms that made me feel like my body was screaming that something wasn’t right. Every time I called triage, I was told everything was fine.
However, when I went in for my 39-week appointment, the incredible staff at my OB/GYN office immediately recognized that I was absolutely not fine. My life and my baby’s life were both in danger. I am beyond thankful that we survived, because so many women unfortunately do not.
With everything happening in legislation right now, I think it is incredibly important to continue bringing awareness to women’s reproductive rights, maternal healthcare, and the medical needs of women everywhere.
Growing up, I was always told birth would be this beautiful, magical experience. Instead, I was met with a deeply traumatizing pregnancy and birth experience. While I did get my beautiful baby boy, I was also left battling debilitating postpartum depression.
The entire reason Classically Groovy exists today is because of my mental health journey, surviving postpartum depression, and choosing to keep going.
I want other women to know they are not alone. Please listen to your body. If something feels wrong, tell your doctor. Advocate for yourself. Ask for help. Reach out for resources. There is absolutely no shame or embarrassment in needing support.
If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, postpartum depression, or thoughts of su***de, please know help is available. You can call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline 24/7.
