Today as I was fixing Piper’s hair before church, we were talking about Easter and what means and why we celebrate today. I reminded her that Jesus died on the cross and rose again three days later so that we can spend eternity in heaven with Him. Lately, all discussions of heaven lead back to the same place—Uncle Adam. “What about my body?” she said. “Will I be young when I go to heaven?” Before I could answer her she clarified her reason for asking. “He only knew me as a kid. Will he recognize me if I’m all grown up when I get to heaven? How will he know who I am?” Walking along side anyone through grief is a wild ride, but a deep thinking and articulate 5 year old is another level entirely. Without the hope of Jesus and eternity, I wouldn’t have words to help her. But I know, with everything in me, that because of what Jesus did for us on the Cross…because he did not stay in that grave, that heaven is waiting for us. And we will be known and loved and celebrated when we arrive, if we just believe that Jesus is who he says he is. With certainty I can tell her that Uncle Adam will know exactly who she is and we can laugh and cry and imagine that reunion with joy and peace and hope. Because Jesus is Lord and he conquered death and made a way for all of us.
