This is why cutting tourmaline requires more than choosing a pretty shape.

Tourmaline is strongly pleochroic, meaning it absorbs and transmits light differently depending on the crystal direction. In this 5.98-carat indicolite tourmaline, so little light travels along the c-axis that the end-on view appears almost black—what cutters call a closed c-axis.

The cutter must orient the gem carefully, allowing its broad face to reveal that vivid oceanic blue-green while controlling the naturally dark direction. A beautiful example of optical science becoming part of the design.
