I keep coming back to this photograph and thinking about Hayden’s courage.

I hope people remember this part of her and that it doesn’t get lost in the noise, the headlines, or the flattening of public figures into story and spectacle.

Long before it was common for public figures to speak out, Hayden understood something simple and difficult: visibility is not just something you are given, but something you can give away. And she gave hers, again and again, in service of things larger than herself.

She stepped into direct action for animal rights, including entering the waters of Taiji to confront the dolphin slaughter, fully aware of the risk of arrest. She supported marine conservation and broader animal welfare efforts, not as distant endorsements, but as personal alignment.

Her sense of solidarity also extended globally. During the Euromaidan protests, she stood with Ukrainians calling for democratic change, placing herself, inside a moment of political upheaval that also carried personal meaning for her.

And perhaps most quietly powerful, she spoke openly about what so many are taught to hide: domestic violence, postpartum depression, addiction, recovery, and abuse. She did not share these things for ease or attention, but because she understood what her silence could cost others.

Her activism was not polished or performative. It was instinctive, human, sometimes messy, often vulnerable, and always sincere. She was willing to be uncomfortable, to be misunderstood, and to speak before the world was ready to listen.

Hayden was a gifted actor, but that was only part of what she gave us. She used her voice. She showed up. She cared fiercely.

I hope that is remembered too, the way she chose to stand in the world when it mattered.

Rest in peace, Hayden. You deserved so much more time and your courage deserves to be remembered.

Thank you to everyone who donated, shared the campaign, or helped spread the word. Because of your support, the Moon Camp property next to Jackie and Shadow’s habitat will now be permanently protected. What was once planned for development will remain open space for bald eagles and the many other species that depend on it. This is a reminder that when people come together, we really can make a difference. Thank you for helping protect Big Bear’s wildlife for generations to come. 🦅💚

We are heartbroken by the loss of Nicholas Dale, a heroic firefighting aviation pilot who gave his life while protecting Coloradans from the Gold Mountain Fire. Our state is deeply grateful for the brave firefighters, pilots, and first responders who put themselves in harm’s way to keep our communities safe. My heart is with Nicholas’ family, friends, colleagues, and all who are mourning this tremendous loss.
