My Story
The love for the earth began early, beneath the branches of a magnolia tree in a childhood yard. Climbing that tree brought a sense of safety, sheltered within its strong branches. Time was spent up high daydreaming in the quiet. Not far from there stood a huge majestic pecan tree in the pasture, the perfect place for peaceful naps during warm afternoons. Often thoughts wandered to imagining my Native American ancestors lingering under the same branches, finding solace in nature just as they had. Farther into the woods was an enclave of trees where horses had wallowed out a protective canopy. The wind through the trees carried a soft sound, reminiscent of the wild horses that had once taken refuge there to escape the weather. A deep connection to the land and its creatures was felt, along with the wisdom that nature imparts.
As time passed, this love for the earth and its gifts continued to shape a sense of purpose. Old, discarded furniture from neighbors became the focus. Each piece, seemingly forgotten, held the potential for something beautiful. With care, restoration and refinishing brought these pieces back to life, offering them a second chance, much like the land that had always offered shelter and renewal. This passion grew steadily over the years, becoming a lifelong commitment to honoring the past and giving discarded items new meaning.
The connection to nature deepened, finding beauty in the timeless appeal of wood and the craftsmanship of all kinds of furniture—from sleek mid-century modern to the intricate designs of French Rococo. Wood tells a story, and through the art of restoring vintage pieces, a way of honoring that story is found.
The earth provides so much, and a commitment to giving back guides this work. For example, the creation of just one dresser requires the use of 10-15 mature trees. The environmental cost of producing new furniture is significant, but through the restoration of vintage items, that impact is reduced. Each piece restored helps save trees and keeps waste from piling up in landfills.
At Curated Nest, vintage furniture is lovingly restored, offering unique, sustainable pieces with a story. Every item carries with it a history, and each new chapter written honors the earth’s resources, ensuring that it continues to give in return.
