Seems some feel this post was a slight to other shops, it was not and is not meant to be.
We are not located on a hiway, not in a town or even in a busy area. We are half hour off of hiway 101 in a village, one of the smallest in the county. Because people are looking for the crack your own experience and such, we are trying to save them an out of the way trip if they are looking only for that and they see via google or whatnot along standing rock shop such as ours. In fact when people ask we send them to the other places for such things.
Nothing more sinister than that. In fact we said it’s great for them they’re doing so well. But we are a different kind of shop and have been going on close to 40 years now

We recently had a customer come by the shop looking to "crack their own geode" and they were quite confused when we they looked around and saw some opened up we replied we do not do that service as we try to limit the amount of minerals and rocks that we carry that come from outside of not just the USA but outside of the PNW. We will cut open Thunder Eggs and such which sometimes can be like geodes with hollow spots.

There's a little shop up north which is getting great traction by offering that service, which is great for them and that might be part of their business model and all, but a majority of the material we have available is stuff that was mined by either our own family or by close friends of the family. Typically the types of geodes that are featured in those "crack your own" are imported from Morocco or Mexico, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are very pretty and have great sparkle. Heck we do have some of the already opened ones for sale just to have some for people who are looking for those, but it's not our bread and butter. We do have things like the Oregon State Rock, the Thunder Egg, which most of the time is not hollow, but often solid with striking patterns of agate, jasper or sometimes even opal. If you tried using the chain breaker to open one of these theres a good chance you'd break the opener....

So with that, we'd like to remind everyone that although we do have some crystal geodes and such, we are not a crystal shop and we are more of a lapidary shop where one comes to get stuff for making their own jewellery and the like. Yes, we do have some jewellery and all since we have a Sunstone mine and all. But you will not find lots of fossils, spheres made from material not sourced from the greater PNW, and those that we do have the gentleman who makes them lives 15minutes away.

We appreciate all of our regulars and new comers, but just want to make sure that ya'll understand what our main bread and butter is!

Good news….
Well kind of, regarding the theft at our Little Rock shop today, we were able to track down the family and get this sorted and got the items back.
Thankfully we have multiple cameras and live in a small town where it’s also not impossible to find the vehicles staying in known STRs.

So we got it taken care of!

Just a reminder that the shop will be closed once again this weekend as we hold the memorial of Mailand “Lee” King jr, the one who started Pier Ave Rock Shop, with close family.
Although the shop started in the mid 90’s, it was not the first business that was lapidary related for the family. Mailand King Sr was a master gemstone cutter and developed many faceting cuts made especially for Oregon Sunstone which he and his buddies were mining in the 1940’s (the more we learn about the family the more we find about how when and where the grandparents went mining early on!)
Mailand Srs interest in lapidary and gems stems from his father’s business being a jeweler in the late 1900’s up until his passing in 1927.

Currently we are investing back into the custom jewelry making and as we type this have received a notice from the BLM about being given the green light for actively mining the Sunstone claims, the same dirt that my grandparents were digging many many decades ago.

Anyhow… blah blah blah. So we will see you soon and thank everyone who has continued to support our small shop over the changes!

A little reminder that we will be closed tomorrow, Easter Sunday, to be with family and friends, and then closed the following two weekends as well to attend to some family matters.
We’ve been sorting lots of rocks and making mining plans… so going to be a busy summer!
This beauty showed up on one of the huckleberry bushes outside the shop to remind us spring is springing!

We've been fairly quiet the last month or so as it seems we've been chasing our tails with projects and getting ready to ramp up our little mini mining operation again after many decades of waiting on broken promises...
That being said, today marks Mailand "Lee" Kings birthday and he would have turned 86 this year. We spent it gong through more of the bins of material that has been in the family for 3 generations now. While doing that we were serving some great customers and running both of the rock saws all day.
We will have the shop closed the following weekends:
April 11-12th to take care of some Finnish Passport stuff and then the following weekend, April 18-19th as we take Lee's ashes out to be with his parents and nephew at the family memorial site in SE Oregon.

We appreciate all of our regular customers and those that have been finding us due to our random social media postings. There are some bigger things in store for the shop, but first we need to get caught up with the regular stuff!

You know, we’ve got some pretty cool customers here….
A few weeks ago someone stopped by that said they used to work in an area not too far from us that is a bit of a hot spot for agate collecting along the beach. We got to talking about the source for where much of this material comes from and he said he had a piece from what we agreed was most likely that source.

He returned a week ago with a gift for the shop so we can show people what’s still out there if you do some homework and take the path less travelled.

This is a monster agate found in Tillamook county near some really well know beach spots. They’re still out there!

Thanks for sharing this piece with us all and donating it for inspiration for the rest of us!

The rock shop will be closed once again this weekend as we work on some new mineral locations far away from the current ones that my grandparents were working on well over 70 years ago!
Looks promising!

We’ll be back open this weekend 10-5 tomorrow and 10-4 on Sunday!
After this weekend prices will be going up slightly for all jewelry stuff as the price of silver has become an all time high in price…

Well most likely be closed the following weekend as we need to do more at the sunstone mine! And what difference one day makes…. A balmy 36f one day and the following 16f!

The rock shop will be closed until after Christmas as we will be off rockhounding this weekend and then spending some time celebrating a birthday, a teachers hard earned vacation and such.

We thank you all for the support and business over the last year! We’ve got some exciting updates and changes coming for 2026!
