Everyone who guessed this Art Deco ring was the emerald imposter, you were right! 🥳 This unbelievably cool ring features Depression Era simulants, or imposter stones. It was incredibly common in the 1930s to see valuable materials, like 18k white gold with baguette diamonds, mixed with thrifty ones!
On the left, a triplet composed of green cement running through the center of a glass crown and pavilion. Looks the opposite, right? Those are optics, to your eye the glass appears to be the color of the cement in the center. Why does the cement look clear? I’d actually love if someone could explain that to me 😂 Typically, this setup was made using two pieces of colorless beryl (same material as emerald) but this stone went wild and uses only glass and green cement!
On the right is a garnet and glass doublet. Someone guessed green garnet, but nope! Take a look at the red ring around the girdle that appears under the microscope. The cap of this stone is a red garnet full of natural inclusions, but your eye will see the color of the glass pavilion below. In this case green 💚 ✨
