Blue is one of the most rare fancy colors for diamonds. What is your favorite fancy colored diamond?

The De Beers Cullinan Blue, a 15.10-carat step-cut diamond, sold Wednesday at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong to an anonymous buyer by telephone, according to the auction house. The gem, the only blue diamond over 15 carats to ever appear at auction, had a pre-sale high estimate of $48 million. When the bidding was over, it had hammered down for nearly $10 million more: $57,470,391.

“The De Beers Blue captivated me from the moment I laid eyes on it,” Patti Wong, the chairman of Sotheby’s Asia, said in a statement. “With its powerful vivid color, and breathtakingly beautiful cut, it is truly a once-in-a-generation stone, and quite simply the greatest blue diamond of its size I have ever seen.”

The diamond was discovered in South Africa’s Cullinan mine in April 2021 and has received the highest rankings for each of the standards by which the quality of a colored diamond is judged, according to Sotheby’s. The Gemological Institute of America has graded it “fancy vivid blue,” the best possible color grading, which has been awarded to no more than 1 percent of blue diamonds submitted to the group.

The $57.5 million sale price was reached after an eight-minute bidding war among four potential buyers. The figure puts the De Beers Blue just slightly under the record for the most expensive blue diamond to ever sell at auction, held by the 14.62-carat Oppenheimer Blue, which fetched $57,541,779 in 2016.

Beyond comparisons, Wednesday’s auction affirmed the blue diamond’s singular status in the jewelry world. It “puts the stone alongside some of the greatest, finest works by the titans of art history,” Wenhao Yu, the chairman of jewelry and watches for Sotheby’s Asia, told Robb Report in February.

Blue diamonds are among the rarest of all colored diamonds, with their hue typically the result of trace elements of boron within the diamond crystal lattice. Diamonds of other colors can be found in mines around the world, but most blue diamonds come from the same Cullinan mine in South Africa.

The record for the most expensive diamond of any kind to sell at auction remains with the CTF Pink Star, a pink diamond that sold in 2017 for $71.2 million.

The gem is the largest of its kind to cross the block.

Do you like Emerald cut shape diamonds? Christie’s will offer a 103.49-carat diamond that could fetch up to $18 million at its upcoming New York sale.

The emerald-cut, D-Flawless, type IIa stone, called the Light of Africa diamond, will headline the auction house’s Magnificent Jewels sale on June 8, it said Monday. It will be among the items featured as part of Christie’s luxury week.

The diamond was cut from a 299.3-carat rough Petra Diamonds recovered from its Cullinan mine in South Africa in January 2021. Petra then sold the diamond to Dubai-based diamond-sourcing and supply company Stargems DMCC in March of that year for $12.18 million. It is the third-largest high-quality white diamond recovered from Cullinan since Petra acquired it in 2008, the miner noted.

Christie’s will preview the diamond in Geneva from May 6 to 11, followed by Hong Kong from May 22 to 24, before showing it in New York between June 3 and 7.

On May 11, Christie’s Geneva Magnificent Jewels sale will auction a 228.31 pear-shape diamond, considered the largest white diamond ever auctioned.

The gem, dubbed The Rock, is expected to fetch between $20 million and $30 million.

The diamond was mined and polished in South Africa more than two decades ago, Christie’s said. It’s been graded by the Gemological Institute of America as G color, VS1 clarity, and it’s accompanied by a letter from the GIA stating it’s the largest existing D–Z color pear-shape diamond the lab has ever graded.

The previous largest white diamond sold at auction was a 163.41 carat gem, which sold at Christie’s Geneva in November 2017 for $33.7 million.

"Sotheby’s will auction a stone described as “the largest vivid blue diamond ever to appear at auction” on April 27 in Hong Kong.

Sotheby’s estimates that it could bring $48 million.

The 15.1 carat step-cut blue was cut from a rough stone discovered in April 2021. It is “the largest internally flawless step cut vivid blue diamond that the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has ever graded,” according to a press statement.

“This diamond ranks as one of the best De Beers has ever seen,” said Bruce Cleaver, CEO of De Beers Group. “It is extremely rare and unique, and as the Home of Diamonds, De Beers is pleased to join together with Sotheby’s to bring this diamond to the world.”

Only five blue diamonds over 10 carats have ever come to auction, Sotheby’s notes. Until now, none has exceeded 15 carats.

“Blue diamonds of any kind are rare on the market, but this is the rarest of the rare; nothing of remotely similar calibre has appeared at auction in recent years,” says Patti Wong, chairwoman of Sotheby’s Asia. “Hundreds of millions of years in the making, this extraordinary blue diamond is surely one of nature’s finest creations.”
