Ahh…..Topaz, one of our favorite gemstone varieties! Did you know that most Topaz is color enhanced from a clear, colorless stone? With very little market demand, clear Topaz is actually enhanced to produce several shades of blue along with the mystic fire (rainbow), which is enhanced with an artificial coating! However, some of the most valuable Topaz will have natural orange, peach to vibrant pink colors and are a true gift from Mother Nature. These highly prized colors were once highly sought after by the Imperial Russian Court, thereby being forever known as Imperial Topaz. Could you tell the difference between a natural Earth mined diamond versus a laboratory grown man made (created) diamond? The answer is, no!The consuming public cannot tell the difference, and very few jewelers can. However, at Sam Edwards Jewelers we have undergone specialized training that enable us to identify the differences. Natural diamonds, created my Mother Nature, have gone through millions of years of high pressure and heat whereas Lab Diamonds are created by man by using a grain (seed plate) from a natural diamond to ‘jump start’ the process, which usually takes 2-3 weeks to achieve a cuttable crystal, whereas natural diamonds can take millions of years. As a value comparison, a 1 carat round natural diamond can sell for an average of $7,000 as compared to the Lab Grown diamond of the same weight at a mere $800.00, this due the mass quantities being produced versus Mother Nature, who only gives up a limited number each year. Wanna know how Lab grown diamonds are made? (See Picture #2) This is just one of the thousands of Laboratories (factories) in both China and India that house over 3,000 machines (each the size of a Smart car). The production numbers of incredible. Sam Edwards Jewelers always educates our customers and we offer both natural and lab grown diamonds, each meeting the needs and budgets for all of our customers. Any idea what this is? Have you ever seen the 1991 movie “Hook” starring Dustin Hoffman and Robin Williams? This is the ring that was made for Dustin Hoffman’s character “Captain Hook” and was gifted to Sam Edwards by friend, mentor and movie prop creator Cos Altobelli former owner of Altobelli Jewelers, North Hollywood, CA. If you look carefully at the images, you’ll notice this ring resembles the stern of a galleon or pirate ship…..with a possessed look! This is the original ring that was worn by Dustin Hoffman in the well loved film. Sam cherishes this gift and represents one of the many close relationships he has established over the last 40+ years. This industry has afforded Sam Edwards friendships with many customers, celebrities, politicians, athletes, etc. that he cherishes every day.

It’s been said that natural diamonds are rare, and this is true to a certain degree. What’s even more rare within natural diamonds is the Asscher cut. Developed in 1902 by Danish diamond cutter Jospeh Asscher, this 74 facet shape is the sister to the traditional elongated emerald cut that is commonly seen today. The Asscher cut is one of Sam Edwards favorite shape and cut of diamonds as it represents the highest in color purity. This shape resembles a house of mirrors that seems to focus into perpetuity. The image below represents 5.17 carats of diamonds fashioned into the unique step cut facet arrangements and is a Sam Edwards Jewelers design favorite. Have you ever heard of the term Champagne or Cognac colored diamonds? Many are naturally colored and are available from a very light brown to a darker yellowish/brown intensity. They are found primarily in the Argyle diamond mine in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia!
