Gartenberg History

If you want to talk about longevity, here’s a good story. When my parents got married in 1945, my Mother taught my Father the jewelry business. Mom was working in her father’s jewelry store in Altoona. It was called Berman Jewelers. After a year they took a 2000 mile trip through Pennsylvania and settled in Chambersburg to open their own jewelry store. My Mother’s name was Belle, and yes the store was named Belle Jewelers. When I was 17 years old in 1971 , my Father asked me if I was interested in taking over the store. I promptly said “no thanks”. I knew I was going to college and I didn’t want to commit to anything. Three days later he had it sold. He sold it to a company out of Maryland. In 1982, the year my Father passed away, the company that bought the store from my parents, opened the store in the Chambersburg Mall. I worked for the company from 1982 until 1993. After I opened Gartenberg Jewelry, Belle Jewelers was sold to the present owner. There still seems to be a little confusion... Gartenberg Jewelry is totally independent. We are not associated or connected to any other store in the area. I am still continuing the family tradition of doing business the way my parents taught me, with very competitive prices and great customer service. We are proud to live and work in Chambersburg.
