Dana C. Fear

Dana C. Fear Sophisticated Fidget Jewelry
Because we don't grow out of fidgeting but our tastes do mature. Shopping by appointment. My name is on a plaque to prove it.

When I was in the 7th grade my older brother showed me a piece of jewelry someone had made in an art class at his high school. Completely unimpressed, my response was that I was going to make jewelry "way cooler" than that when I went to school there...and I did. After graduation I went straight into the metals program at Ball State University where I made my first piece of kinetic jewelry and gra

duated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Metals. I don't know why or how I felt so sure, just barely into my teens, that jewelry making was going to be a part of my life. To be so confident in a future in the arts, which I didn't understand at all and that didn't align with the Christian cult I grew up in, made no sense. What I do know is that my art and my jewelry, which have been with me all along, even as a stay-at-home-mom to my three kids, have helped heal my life. Seems fitting that it should do the same for others in some small way since many of my customers wear my jewelry therapeutically. If I didn't need money to survive, that alone would be enough. I chose to do my work under my birth name (yes, Fear is my real last name) because I wanted my family legacy to be associated with something beautiful like art instead of dysfunction. Since making that decision I've come to realize that my name, Dana C. Fear, is a personal philosophy. Whenever I see fear in myself I do the best I can to be courageous despite (and sometimes because of) its presence. Because if you know anything about cults and family dysfunction, you know that fear is what gives them power and I aim to be free. Come be free with me.

SOUND UP
It’s all about the surprisingly delightful *click* with this ring. You can hear it on the video but it’s even better when you also feel it.

Announcement! The Solo Slide Ring, my most popular ring, is now the Sliding Scale Ring!

You pick your price! Because this ring is often worn therapeutically I want to make it as accessible as possible while acknowledging it’s full value and leaving the option open for those who can afford to pay more.

Check it out in my Etsy shop—link in bio. All rings are ready to ship.

As spring finally arrives in northern Michigan and everyone slowly starts coming out of hibernation people are seeing the empty building in Cedar and wondering where I’ve gone. The answer is HOME and I couldn’t be happier. I love how peaceful my space is and how I’m able to more easily focus on my work. It feels like a little sanctuary and for us sensitive artist types that’s essential for the creative process.

I’m making some changes to adjust to the new location and one of them is teaching workshops—both in my studio and anywhere else people would like to have me. I’m excited to teach my first 5 day workshop at in North Carolina this July. There are 5 slots left if you want to join in—it’s going to be a lot of fun!

Three lovely rings for three lovely ladies.

I’ve been fortunate to have Liz and Rachel as neighbors for the past year. They’ve been the support I’ve needed as I recently made the difficult decision to not renew the lease for my retail shop and studio in Cedar.

Liz commissioned me to make these copper replacement agate rings for the three of us to mark our time together in The Cedar Station. Each ring has three wires behind the stone that gently slide and click with up and down movement. When we wear them we are reminded that The Cedar Station is not the building where we did business, it’s the community we formed while we were there together.

This picture was taken in an empty room as I’ve already moved everything out and into the new space. Even though the decision didn’t come easily I’m excited for the changes the move is forcing for my business.

Stay tuned for more information as I get settled into the new space. In the meantime, all items in my Etsy shop are ready-to-ship, I’m still available for in-person shopping by appointment and will announce some upcoming pop-ups soon!

HOW’D SHE DO THAT?—SOLO SLIDE RING

Not sure how often I’ll do this since documenting each step kinda sucks the joy out of making, but if you’d like to see more I’ll try to keep them coming.

The Jacquay Family Pendant/Brooch

What a joy it was to make this piece for one of the art teachers from my high school where my metalsmithing journey began nearly 30(!!) years ago.

Six kids and two parents represented by all natural stones—diamond x2, amethyst x2, pink tourmaline x2, emerald and Ethiopian opal.
