Gather Goods Co

Gather Goods Co Gift Shop & Coworking Space in Downtown Cary By Designer Michelle Smith • Gather Goods Co is an online shop with a focus on gifts for the home, garden & self.

We are based in downtown Cary, North Carolina. Our shop features a curated selection of well made artisanal gift products: local foods, bath salts and oils, plants and terrariums, jewelry, apparel and accessories for men and women, note cards and local foods, the majority of which are made by North Carolina designers. In addition, we host craft, food, gardening and business classes at locations ar

ound the Triangle. SHOP

The majority of goods carried by Gather are made by micro artisan / maker entrepreneurs meaning goods made by emerging business owners who hand-craft or manufacture their goods in small quantities. Gather’s owner Michelle is herself a maker entrepreneur who specializes in textiles, and home goods. Michelle’s goal is to elevate the work of these makers so that Gather’s customers appreciate the value of the product they are purchasing and the time and care that went into the making of each piece.

Last night I hosted some of the ladies from my bookclub in the community room at Gather for a mahjong night. I recently convinced them to learn how to play so that I could have another group of friends to play with. For the two tables, I packed all my supplies in the leather Mahjong carrying bags that we carry in the shop, which I love. They’re super beautiful and they can be used for an overnight travel bag as well as storing a full set of mahjong supplies depending on how you want to use it. For the first table, I used one of my mahjong mats that I designed that is pink with fun purple wavy lines on it. I decided that an olive green tile would look great with it as well as pink wooden racks. On the other table I used the burgundy fall-feeling mat that I designed alongside some teal tiles and burgundy racks. It was a pretty mahjong setup and a fun night overall. ✨ You can find all of these pieces in the Gather Goods Co shop and online and if you’re interested in learning mahjong or playing at the shop I have an open play tomorrow at 10am (registration is required) and I have two classes this month on September 21 one in the morning and one in the evening, depending on your preference.

I just got in a lot of new colors of wooden mahjong racks. These go really quickly and often sell out from the manufacturers for long stretches of time so if you see a color that you like, you should probably order it soon as it can be hard to keep these in stock. I especially love the cobalt blue, the chartreuse, the mint. All of these wooden mahjong racks come with a magnetic pusher and really elevate a game. They are especially fun to coordinate with your tiles and mats.

Earlier today fine artist, textile designer and quilter Michelle Wilkie shared with a few of the community coworkers and others her tips on creating a strategic framework of values that helps inform your practice. There were lots of great tips centered around finding your values which I’m a big fan of as well. This related / unrelated nugget she shared when talking about her stressful high-powered corporate job resonated “just because you can do something and are good at it, doesn’t mean you need to do it.” 🤯 This is something I’ve personally struggled with as the wearer of many hats in my business and also the most experienced in many ways. I get bogged down a lot by things that I’d love to take off my plate but need my attention anyway. It’s a constant practice of “Do I need to do this? Do I want to do this? Am I doing this now because it’s easier in the moment but draining me in the long run”? As your business and craft expands you have to juggle your needs, alongside your revenue goals, the demands of your personal life, and also align that with what is personally calling and fulfilling to you. This is a good question to help distill whether you are just running through the motions or if what you are doing actually brings you value in relation to what matters most to you. Do you have any work or practice mantras that help remind you to focus?

I have just posted the September classes online. We’ve got an open Mahjong play this Friday at 10am (and every 2nd Friday of the month). I provide the tiles and mats and all you have to do is show up with your 2026 NMJL card and play with a group of others in a casual and laid-back environment. Then this coming Monday we have Astrology 101 where our resident astrologer/tarot card reader Katy Chappell will go over your birth chart and what it all means. Later in the month (and every month) we have two Learn American Mahjong classes, one in the daytime and one in the evening. Our goal is to be an inclusive space where q***r folks, people of color, etc can learn and play American Mahjong and feel comfortable and have fun. At the end of September I’m teaching a dried flower wreath making class to get you in the fall spirit. Registration is required for all. Light snacks, herbal tea and seltzers are provided but you can always BYOB and food. Bring a friend or make a new one and be in community with others at our downtown Cary shop and classroom space. It feels good to flex our creative muscles and hang out together. See you soon! 💗

I love these micro tip gel pens that we carry in the store. They write in the color of the pen itself. They dry very quickly. I think the colors themselves are very pretty. And I prefer a micro tip over all other line thicknesses and it’s actually really hard to find a micro tip in a gel pen. I’m currently restocking these and re-ordering more colors. I really like using different colors to denote different things in my journal and to-do list and calendar. Are you an office supply ju**ie like me? What’s your current favorite office supply?

I’ve been ordering and restocking planners, notepads and other office supplies and calendars for the shop. I personally love office supplies and that is the biggest category I have been organizing in my months long office redo at home as well because I try out all of them myself and collect so many, lol. When I was a little girl, I used to have a little classroom that I created in my basement and my favorite thing was pretending to teach the classes and setting it up with all the office supplies. 🤪😵 And recently, when there used to be a teacher supply store near me, I would go frequently and stock up on teacher planners, stickers, etc. And while I’m personally not very good at using all the fancy planners (just a plain weekly planner open on my desk works very well for my out of sight out of mind brain alongside my Google Calendar) I know what works for me and I actually use a lot of the spiral bound yearly planners for my collages since I have amassed so many of them. These notepads below that I designed are in the shop and online. I made them to be colorful and fun and reminders when I need them since I have to make so many daily notes. They say “practice makes better” and “done is better than perfect”. Two mantras that are always top of mind when I’m working. And I love the colorful pens that we have in the shop (and I’m re-ordering more now). I’m super super picky about the pens that I use and these gel ones write in the color of the pen and have micro tips, which is my personal preference and fave. 👌 🖊️ ✏️ 📚

September classes are officially added to the website. I’ll be working on October and November later this week. This coming Friday, we have an open American mahjong play. This is for those who already know how to play and are looking for others to play with in a casual and laid-back environment. I provide all the supplies you just have to bring your 2026 card. Registration is required. Then next Monday, September 14 StellaTerra Candle Co. will be leading an astrology 101 class where she goes over your birth chart and helps you to understand and interpret it in relation to astrology. On Sunday, September 20 I am teaching a daytime watercolor class where you’ll get a cozy watercolor workbook, as well as a paint pallet to take home. On Monday, September 21 we have two learn American mahjong classes, one in the day and a separate one in the evening for whatever you prefer in terms of a class time of day. In this class, you’ll learn how to play American Mahjong and you’ll have a mocktail to sip on as well. And lastly, on Monday, September 8, I will be teaching a dried flower wreath class. Space is limited in all of our classes so sign up early if you’re interested. For all of our classes, light snacks, seltzers, and herbal tea are provided. All of our classes are now taught in our upstairs classroom space at the Gather Goods Co shop in downtown Cary. Classes are an amazing way to connect with others and create community and just feel more creative by working with your hands. All of our classes are laid-back, inclusive, and guaranteed to have you walking away with lots of book and show recommendations and cozy feel good vibes. If you’re interested in one of these classes and the dates don’t work out for you, if you can pull together a group of four or more people, I can teach a private class on a date of your choosing if we can coordinate it in advance. See you soon! ✨

This coming Wednesday September 9th at 11am fine artist, textile designer and quilter Michelle Wilkie will be talking with the Gather Goods Co community cohort about getting your ideas from your head into action. Prior to moving full-time into fine art, Michelle worked for many years in a project management role. As a fine artist she’s exhibited her work and done residencies all over the world. We’ve open just a couple spots up to the general public so grab a ticket if you’d like to join!

Earlier this month, I was catching up with textile designer, fine artist and quilter Michelle Wilkie. She is a full-time artist who has a space at Artspace in Raleigh. Prior to making the transition to full-time artist she worked for many years in a project management role and as we were chatting, we were talking about sometimes how hard it can be to get from idea to implementation and she said I can talk about - that that’s something that I do in my own practice and I’ve gotten really good at because I learned all these tools in my professional life prior. So I said let’s do it! And I said, let’s offer it to my community coworker cohort at Gather Goods Co so that’s what we’re doing but we actually have a handful of spots available for the general public (that’s you!) too so there aren’t very many, there’s only like five but if this is something you’re interested in, you should definitely sign up as it will be a great time to be in community with other makers and creatives and women just sharing and learning and chatting alongside one another. You can find the link to sign up on the gathergoodsco.com website under classes and events. This talk will be happening this coming Wednesday, September 9 at 11 AM at Gather Goods Co in downtown town Cary upstairs in our community coworking space upstairs at 11 AM. Hope to see you there!
