My sister and I have been fascinated with rocks and stones, beads and bones for a long, long time. It began when we were children. Grandma
was a full blooded Mescalero Apache. She used to sit in the evenings making her jewelry from natural rocks - stones - bones - feathers and beads. She called them her "Desert Jewels." She told us that the rocks and the stones spoke to her. With that little bit of information my sister and I would spend hours walking in the hills of Las Palomas, New Mexico looking down at our feet...looking for a pretty or an odd shaped rock to pick up and put in our bag. That night after dinner, we would take them out one at a time, place them carefully on a blanket and admire each. Then we would pick up each one, hold it as tight as we could in our hand and quietly listen in hopes we too might hear it speak to us. Surely we would be able to hear its secrets. Grandma would never tell us what the rocks and stones would tell her, so it had to be a very important secret. As of yet, they still hold their secrets from us, but, to this day, holding them in our hands gives us a feeling of excitement - a happiness. It's the wonder of how that stone or rock came to be and what has it seen. Why it picked me to pick it. Maybe that's the secret they hold. Maybe that's the secret they spoke to our Grandmother. My sister and I put these stones and beads and rocks and clasps together for you...so they might speak to you. If they speak to you; if you hear them say to you, "Pick me! Pick me!"...then take them home with you. Rita & Diana
