I have been a busy šŸ

New favorite word: chatoyant
From the French ā€˜chat’/cat.
Created pretty little metal pieces instead of the simple balled wire to compliment the fiddleback maple’s chatoyance.

Shorter ā€˜Brushstrokes’ and ā€˜Beacons’ with patterned metal.

Fiddleback maple has chatoyant pattern, an optical effect seen when light reflects off tiny, parallel fibers or lines inside. This wood from a tree on my property, cut for firewood then the pattern was noticed.

Becoming familiar with and making good use of all the beautiful things can take a lifetime.

Camano Maple earrings are finally on the Loyalsmith website. Still narrowing down final shapes, posted are first and second iterations just to get them onto your ears!

This pair for the rivets I just balled up (melted) the ends of wire before sliding them through a hole front to back and riveting the back side.

My designs have always been very lightweight, and these follow suit despite their having more surface area.

David is making it hard to commit to just a few favorite shapes to put on the web. Each time I show up to get a batch of book matched pairs of the fiddleback patterned wood- which, btw, undulates and is shimmery as you turn it- he’s got a new shape!

Bought some more blue cabochons for summer. Lighter blue Swiss topaz, turquoise, Lapis, and the purplish blue iolite.

They look so simple. Well, these are tricky little buggers that take precision and time!

After the book matched wood pieces are shaped, a slot is made across and down where it meets a larger drilled hole. A piece of metal hammered just flat enough to fit down through the slot is able to swivel once it hits the drilled hole. To keep that in place another smaller hole is drilled front to back. A short piece of metal wire that I’ve either balled up on one end or soldered a bezel cup to is pushed through then riveted on the back oh so carefully- a paper clip is placed in the slot to give the top of the wood a bit more strength to withstand the riveting should my hammer blow slip off of the wire.

These are new designs made with dear friend/collaborator David Taber of David noticed the gorgeous patterns in the wood from a tree cut down in my driveway and has made shapes from it for me to ā€˜merge’ my metalwork with. There a few left for the second weekend of the Camano Island Studio Tour.

Come visit me this coming weekend, May 16 & 17, stop number 8 which is my actual home and workshop. If it’s drizzly out I’ll offer you some tea!

More sneak peek at what will be available during the Camano Island Studio Tour next month. These finished today, just need to put earwires on them.

Had a grand time with David at his shop today, it kinda feels like college, connecting on just the joy of creating something together. I make the metal parts, ā€˜merge’ by way of rivets, and set stones on some. Thanks, my friend!

These are the fanciest Loyalsmith there are. Little gold leaves with posts hold a swaying half drilled pink pearl held onto a teensy post with a dab of apoxy and additionally secured with the placement of a mirror image shape.

This is possibly the busiest I’ve ever been, hanging a student show at the that’s opening on Saturday, filling a order, and prepping for the Camano Island Studio Tour. Multi tasking is NOT my forte, so don’t ask me to remember anything else right now. It’s a one hour at a time kinda month.
