At 81, I finally wrote the novel I always meant to.
The River Boat Gambler — based on the true life of George Devol, the most charming card cheat ever to work the Mississippi. A man who could read anybody at a card table, except the friend he loved.
Writing it brought back the steam trains of my Cedar Rapids boyhood — that lonesome whistle through an open window that I've never forgotten. The whole book turned out to be about loving a world that's gone.
It's funny and it's sad, and I'm proud of it.
