Charon doesn't move for nothing. The coin on the tongue, the offering at the threshold — these aren't superstitions. They're contracts. A formal acknowledgment that the passage between one world and the next requires something of you. That you cannot cross without leaving a piece of yourself behind.

The Hand of Protection is one of the oldest symbols on earth. Hamsa. Hand of Miriam. The open palm facing outward that says: you don't get to come in here.

The ward goes up before the danger arrives. That's the whole point.

Patricia learned this the hard way — that protection isn't reactive. You don't build the threshold after something crosses it. You build it in the quiet. In the ordinary Tuesday evenings. In the deliberate choosing of what you put on your body before you walk out the door.

Patricia Moyer is not the hero who went looking for the monster.
