June’s second birthstone is Alexandrite!
While somewhat lesser-known, alexandrite is a stunning gemstone with perplexing qualities not often found in naturally-occurring stones. Many refer to alexandrite as “emerald by day, ruby by night” due to its incredible color-changing phenomena. Deep blue-green in natural light, warm red-purple in incandescent light, this birthstone is a true chameleon!
A fairly recent gemological discovery in 1830s Russia, alexandrite was named after tsar Alexander II, as the gem’s colors matched the red and green of the country’s military colors at the time. Gem-quality natural alexandrite is extremely rare, therefore extremely expensive. Lab-grown alexandrite is much more accessible, just as beautiful, and makes for very durable and interesting jewelry!
Stay tuned for June’s final birthstone…
