In sorority recruitment, PNMs meet a lot of people in a short window. With back-to-back conversations, you might walk away from a conversation realizing you never caught her name. You might think you forgot it, but distraction is usually the real reason a name doesn’t stick. Between thinking about the house, the conversation, and how you’re coming across, you don’t have room in your head to lock in the name.
A few small habits can change that. First, try to quiet all of your other thoughts and focus on what she’s saying. Repeat the name back when she introduces herself. Ask about pronunciation or spelling even if you think you already know the answer. “Caroline, is that caroLINE or caroLYN?” Same with spelling. Or “Leila, that’s so pretty. Is it Leila with an a or an e?”
After each party, write down every name and what you remember about each recruiter and the conversation. It could be her dolphin tattoo or the Sims - that’ll help lock it in your memory.
