Where would you live if you could live anywhere?

When we finally left the 'traditional' retail world behind, and traded our ties and steady paychecks for the terrifying satisfaction of running our business the way we felt a jewelry business should be run, we found ourselves asking the question: Where would we call home?

Mom said let's go to the Hill Country. More than thirty years ago, my parents had purchased an antique elevator dial from a retired doctor in Comfort, a fixture that still hangs in their home today, and they had always loved the area. We searched all over the state, all over the country in fact, but after all that searching, she was right - as mothers often are. The Hill Country just has a certain magic to it, and nowhere else felt quite right.

So our families moved here. We bought homes, and built our businesses. J Fox Custom Fine Jewelry became rooted in the Boerne community, and after a few years we were able to move from the art district to our very own studio right on Main Street.

Uncovering this rose window again after decades hidden behind grime and growth was one of our favorite milestones while renovating our studio. Originally, this beautiful window was installed by Bob and Diane Potter back when it was Bob's orthodontic practice. Eventually, they would retire to Comfort, and buy the now famous Hotel Giles. They restored the century-old hotel, and would spend their later years running it as a bed and breakfast, and antique shop.

An antique shop that, once upon a time in the late 80s, sold an elevator dial to a young couple who was just passing through on their way back to Dallas.

We reject over 95% of the certified diamonds we look at for our clients.

Sure, dozens of stones on the market might look great on paper, but a certificate doesn't tell you how a gem actually performs in the wild.

With elongated shapes like this marquise, the hidden enemy is the dreaded “bow-tie effect”, a murky belly or dead, glassy center that makes the stone look lifeless the second it hits natural light.

That’s why we never just call a broker, say “send me a 2-carat F/VS1,” and hope for the best. We talk to our cutters, review videos, and throw out almost everything until we find the one single diamond that meets both your criteria and our own.

We can post an unfiltered macro shot of this gorgeous custom ring because there is nothing to hide. That’s the difference between a diamond that looks good on paper, and one that looks good on the finger.

Emeralds and jade get their color from chromium, tsavorite from vanadium, and malachite from copper. Green diamonds, however, get their color from what isn't there.

Green diamonds are formed when a diamond is exposed to radiation, either in a lab or naturally deep underground. The radiation knocks carbon atoms out of their normal positions in the crystal lattice, creating vacancies which absorb red and yellow light, allowing only the green wavelengths to pass through and reach our eyes.

Strangely enough, because natural radiation particles rarely pe*****te deep into the stone, the green color is often only a thin surface layer, requiring master cutters to be exceptionally careful not to remove the color that makes these natural diamonds so rare. By contrast, lab-grown stones are exposed to special high-energy beams that saturate the entire crystal, leading to a uniform color that can be easily faceted and even re-polished without concern.

70 microns is the thickness of a fine human hair.
2.5 microns is the thickness of "gold over silver" jewelry... if you're lucky.

That's the FTC's requirement to be labeled "vermeil" or "heavy gold plate." That's zero-point-zero-zero-two-five millimeters, if you're counting. And when it comes to plated jewelry, vermeil is the nice stuff!

Then you've got "gold-filled", a thicker layer of karat gold, sure, but bonded over base metals like copper or brass. It still wears through over time, and can turn as your skin reacts with the metal underneath.

Or you’ve got standard gold plating. The layer of gold there is so thin that we literally couldn't even render it on our graphic.

In the jewelry industry, there is a massive gulf between things built to hit a price-point and look good for a few months, and things built to actually withstand a life's worth of wear.

At our studio, we draw a hard line. We don’t do gold-plating of any kind. We've never sold a single piece of gold-filled, vermeil, or plated jewelry (besides the occasional rhodium) because we believe fine jewelry shouldn't come with an expiration date. A proper piece should be resizable, refinishable, and able to be passed down through generations without revealing a cheap base metal underneath the second it gets honest wear.

Some of the most iconic shapes in our industry were born when a cutter stared down a ruined diamond and muttered those exact words.

While cuts like the round brilliant are the product of complex calculations and intense study, the half-moon cut owes its existence to damage control.
At the dawn of the 1900s, diamond-cutting was still high-risk work. An unobserved flaw, or a slip of the hand could turn a beautiful diamond into a glittery paperweight.

Savvy dealers began buying these fractured stones for pennies on the dollar, and finding creative ways to cut away the damaged sections. By the early 1920s, the half-moon had become a defining staple of Art Deco design.

Suddenly, major diamond houses were cutting half-moons intentionally rather than just recycling damaged stones. Today you'll actually pay a small premium for truly well-cut matched pairs.

Turns out sometimes the best way forward really is cutting your losses.

$1400. That's the average amount a couple spends on a pair of wedding bands in America.

And if you're looking for a pair of rings featuring gold and diamonds at that price point... well, you're not going to find them here.

It's not that we're slapping crazy markups on our work, or that we impose some arbitrary minimum. In fact, we're always happy to work with you to maximize your budget using alternative metals and smart design choices.

Being brutally honest, when you see a yellow gold men's band or a gold band with large diamond accents in a retail showcase for a few hundred dollars, you're seeing a piece that just isn't made to last. We aren't judging anyone for buying what they can afford, we simply choose not to build jewelry that is engineered to wear thin, warp, or fail.

If we can't build it right, we'd rather not build it at all.

So if you're shopping for a solid gold wedding set for less than $1400, we're probably not your jeweler. But if you're looking for heirloom-grade bands that you can wear through daily life and actually pass down to your children one day, then give us a call.
