Fired Up Dichroic Designs

Fired Up Dichroic Designs Handcrafted Art Glass Jewelry Hello, I’m Ann Bowers. I’m originally from Knoxville, TN and currently live in Altoona, PA.

I specialize in original dichroic glass jewelry designs, and also offer training programs to other budding glass artists. I was introduced to warm glass after returning to the US from my time overseas in the US Air Force. While designing jewelry that involved sterling silver and gemstones, I came across my first dichroic glass cabochons. Deciding to incorporate the glass into my pieces, I became s

o intrigued with the gem-like cabs that I decided to learn how to create them myself. Soon after moving to PA, I took my first fusing class at a local stained glass shop, and fell in love with warm glass. Since then, I have increased my knowledge of fusing with additional classes, books, online resources, and self-taught methods in my home studio. I am especially drawn to dichroics, and love to experiment with different designs in order to create unique jewelry items. Watching the glass transform through all of its different stages is absolutely mesmerizing. There’s nothing more thrilling than opening up the kiln to see how the glass has transformed into something beautiful!

Every now & then, I go through my glass cut-offs and see what I can use in my casting molds.

Here's an example of a pendant with a channel in between the layers of glass. A special material is used to create this channel. The glass fuses around it, and it is later removed so that a chain can be threaded though.

These earring cabs were made with 5 pieces of glass each. Four small 1/4" squares on the bottom, and a clear 1/2" square piece on top to "cap" it. The heat of the kiln (1,550 degrees) turns the square pieces into a solid, round cabochon.
