This is definitely sad news ๐๐
In 2011 there was an exhibition called Think Twice: New Latin American Jewelry at the Bellevue Arts Museum. I was visiting, and my now husband found out about it and took me as part of our weekend activities.
This exhibition changed my life. In the lapse of the three and a half hours we spent there, I decided that jewelry was what I wanted to do and that was the world I wanted to live in. It opened my eyes to what Latin artists could do and how they were thriving. It moved me to tears and I became obsessed with finding everything I could about what I was lucky to experience that day.
After I came back to Mexico, I reached the curator of the exhibition and told her what had just happened. She put me in contact with lots of the artists and welcomed me into that world. Within months, I was now taking workshops with some amazing jewelry artists from all over the world in Mexico City and my hometown. I read so many books, essays and articles from different associations in different countries. The curator and I became very close friends. One of those artists became like my family and my daily job was now only a stepping stone into the next chapter of my life: La Objeteria Jewelry.
Later I left Mexico, came to Bellevue and visited that museum with a grateful heart so many times over the years. It was at one of their events that I met someone who pointed me to the Seattle Metals Guild and then again my new life took another turn. I gained so many good friends and to this day, that community is my constant source of knowledge, camaraderie and more. I got to have some of my work exhibited there briefly and to showcase my pieces and sell them there.
It breaks my heart that the museum is closing and that I wonโt get to add more life-changing memories related to it. I am thankful for all the ways my life is better every day because they decided to say yes to an exhibit and make it accessible to everyone. I wish someone would save this museum and let it change so many more lives. In the meantime, I will forever be grateful for the museumโs part in my story.
Gracias Bellevue Arts Museum,
xoxo,
-Barbara
With a heavy heart, we share that Bellevue Arts Museum (BAM) will be closing its doors today, marking the end of an era for our beloved institution that has served our community since 1947. This decision has been incredibly difficult and follows significant financial challenges that we have been unable to overcome.
BAM has been more than just a museum; it has been a space for creativity, learning, and connection. From the passion of our founding community to the iconic exhibitions and events like the Bellevue Arts Fair, BAM has been a cornerstone of Bellevue's cultural identity. Despite our best efforts to navigate financial instability, we have reached a point where we can no longer sustain our operations.
We understand the deep sadness this news brings, and we share in your heartbreak. We want to express our deepest gratitude to our incredible staff, docents, volunteers and you all who have supported us through the years. Your dedication and love for BAM have made this journey worthwhile.
While this chapter closes, we hold onto hope for a new beginning. BAM has filed for Receivership with the goal of protecting our assets and exploring potential restructuring. Though this path is uncertain, it offers a chance for reinvention and new opportunities.
Thank you for being part of the BAM family. Letโs keep the spirit of art and community alive in Bellevue. Please check press release for more details.
