For thousands of years, the cicada has been a symbol of change, renewal, rebirth, metamorphosis, and transformation. Instead of one major metamorphosis, the cicada’s 17-year life is marked by multiple moltings (or sheddings of old layers). On its 5th molting, it finally leaves the ground to emerge into the light.

From there, they use their large eyes to seek full awareness of their surroundings. Through powerful song and strong communication, they show us what it is to use voice in a community to be infinitely more effective in a unified pursuit.

In 2020, we worked together with Dialogue on Race Louisiana to find a symbol that might, in some way, capture the essence of DORLA and share a bit of the story of the good work they do in our community. After Zoom meetings, phone conversations, research, and feedback, we landed on the cicada.

“Dialogue on Race Louisiana is dedicated to the elimination of institutional racism through education, action, and transformation. Its core program, the Dialogue on Race Series, is a local community-led educational entity providing an enlightened understanding of racism in a non-threatening, respectful environment."

A sterling silver appreciation post. ✨ Did you know, nearly every piece of jewelry you'll find on the MIMOSA website can also be made in sterling silver?

Sterling silver is a popular metal for jewelry due to its durability and beautiful shine. It's an alloy composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Look for the "925" stamped inside your sterling silver jewelry from us!

If you wear your MIMOSA in sterling silver, we want to see. 😍 Post and tag us

Tough and tolerant.
Rooted and resilient.

When the rest of the green has browned and withered away, the dwarf palmetto blankets our swamps, bayous, and bottomlands with a hardy hope of survival.

From fruit to shade to shelter, they prove a necessary ingredient for life in one of the harshest habitats.

The dwarf palmetto stands sturdy through frost and fire, holds strong through the deepest floods and driest droughts, and for those of us who live alongside it, we know its silhouette as a hallmark of home.

👉When we think of the Palmetto, we primarily picture its eye-catching fan shape. But there's more to this plant than meets the eye; its usefulness extends from its leaves to its berries and beyond.

These little berries, included in our design, are food for much of our wildlife here in South Louisiana. Including our black bear population!

These molds are waiting for casting day. Inside the plaster is a void, left by burned-out wax (the lost-wax part of lost-wax casting). We'll fill that void with molten metal, and it'll take the shape of the jewelry designs inside.

As far back as the first found needle, we humans have been piecing together everything from prehistoric fiber fabrics to patchwork leather hides.

Our track record in textiles spans most of human history, and woven throughout it are the stories of who we were and who we’ve become.

A quilt of sackcloth scraps and a granny square blanket made from leftover yarn were handed down from both sides of my family tree. Under them, I feel a heartbeat close to the loved ones who made them.

From the earliest garments necessary for survival to couture creations fit for a queen, sewing and weaving have always been part of our story.

Across time, cultures, and countless civilizations, the idea of wrapping up in handmade warmth is universal.

In trunks and chests across the world sit woven, sewn, crocheted, and knit blankets, passed-down prized possessions of generations for as far back as we have memory.

Each one a patchwork of tradition, a link to loved ones lost, and a treasure that keeps us blanketed in the comfort of ages through the coldest seasons of our lives.

This collection is meant to honor all the weaves and stitches that came before, the best way I know how.

"I can’t imagine anyone capturing the magical mushroom any better…! Do yourself a favor and find a piece of whimsical art to wear everyday …!" —Marci L.

When you know a place, subtle changes you might otherwise miss become exciting new developments, so it is with our home away from home, nestled in the ravines of the Tunica Hills.

Change is constant in the woods. Leaves turn with the seasons, seedlings sprout, fern fronds unfurl, and berries sprinkle on branches, but the stars of the show in these woods (as I've learned) are mushrooms.

When I think I've seen all those woods have to offer, a new-to-me species peeks out from an old log or patch of moss. I fall deep into the gills of the underside, into the ridges and folds, into the textures and colors that offer themselves so generously.

Mushrooms are the Easter eggs of the woods, nature's scavenger hunt for anyone curious enough to take her up on it, a not-so-buried treasure.
