In all the news about shutdowns and debt ceilings and potential defaults, an important story was overlooked this week! The world's newest global environmental treaty was signed into law. It aims to dramatically reduce mercury pollution, including in the gold mining sector.

Japan, a country which has come to epitomize mercury poisoning in modern times, today became one of the first countries to sign a historic new international convention to reduce emissions and releases of the toxic metal into air, land and water and to phase out many products that contain mercury.

Gold Rush - South America airs Discovery Channel on Friday, Aug 2. The reality show miners from Alaska plan to look for a claim in the Madre de Dios region. In a preview set in Guyana, the show illustrated conventional mercury mining and the Alaska miners pledged not to use those techniques.
