𝐀 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐑𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐭

We had previously created a beautiful bracelet for her, designed by her husband and fabricated in our shop (https://www.rweberjewelry.com/portfolio/intertwined-two-tone-bangle-with-diamond-bezels/), so when she returned looking for a special birthday gift for her niece, the brainstorming began immediately. She brought in an assortment of loose stones, jewelry components, and family pieces to explore. Among them was a ring that had belonged to her mother. As she shared the story behind it, one detail became especially important: her niece had been very close to her grandmother. My first thought was to simply size the ring for her niece, but there was one problem. She doesn’t wear rings. Then she showed me a photograph of her niece wearing a stack of bracelets. That changed everything. We decided to transform the ring into a bracelet while preserving the original piece as completely as possible. One of the primary challenges was engineering the bracelet so the ring would remain centered on the top of the wrist and function securely as part of the design. To keep the project within budget, I suggested using sterling silver for the bracelet while retaining the original gold ring. The two-tone combination worked beautifully and gave the finished piece a fresh, contemporary look. I sourced several bangle-style bracelets before selecting one with bead details that complemented the character of the ring. From there, my goldsmith and I worked through the mechanics of incorporating the ring into the bracelet so it would serve both as the focal point and as part of the clasp system. The final construction uses the natural tension of the bangle along with the existing design of the ring to keep the piece securely in place, all while keeping the closure visually discreet. Best of all, we were able to preserve and use the entire original ring. The finished bracelet became more than a birthday gift. It allowed her niece to wear a piece of her grandmother’s jewelry in a way that suited her own style while keeping the original ring and its history intact. After receiving the gift, she shared these wonderful words:

“Kirsten LOVES her bracelet. She immediately recognized her grandmother’s ring and is just thrilled. It looks beautiful on her. Thank you! And John also loved it and thought the engineering was brilliant.”

For me, that is exactly what thoughtful jewelry redesign should do. Preserve the memory while creating something that can be loved and worn again.

I had previously sized several rings for her, including a cherished diamond ring that belonged to her grandmother. During one of our conversations, she mentioned having several other pieces tucked away that she simply no longer wore. Meaningful gifts from her grandmother, her husband, and other family members. Rather than allowing those stones to remain unworn, we began exploring how they could be brought together in a new design. A necklace wasn’t practical at this stage of her life, with little ones still in the pulling and grabbing phase, but a ring offered the perfect solution. We took apart a ring and a pendant, revealing a collection of stones in several different shapes and sizes. She loved the idea of transforming them into an “X marks the spot” ring for her middle finger, something distinctive enough to showcase the sentimental stones, yet comfortable and practical for everyday wear. As both a mother and a professional, she needed a design that could keep up with an active lifestyle. It needed to sit low on the hand, feel comfortable, and avoid high settings that could catch or scratch little ones. The challenge was finding the right configuration for stones of varying sizes and shapes while creating a design that felt balanced and intentional. I developed two subtly different layouts for her to consider, and once the final arrangement was selected, we determined that the baguette diamonds would be channel set while the round diamonds would be bead set. This allowed us to maintain the clean design while keeping the overall profile as low as possible. The finished ring brought everything together beautifully. Sentimental stones, thoughtful design, and everyday practicality. In this case, X really did mark the spot.

I first met her while visiting the West, introduced by my sister. We spent the afternoon around her kitchen table, talking, sharing stories, and getting to know one another. As our conversation unfolded, several silk jewelry pouches were placed on the table, each holding treasured pieces ready to begin a new chapter. Many of the pieces had been passed down through her family and had already been redesigned decades earlier to suit a busy professional life. Now, it was time to reimagine them once again. The first project we completed together was a custom wedding band created from meaningful family stones. Among the loose gemstones was a beautiful sapphire that immediately stood out, waiting for the right design to showcase its color and character. Her goal was a pendant elegant enough for special occasions, yet versatile enough to wear every day. One of my favorite parts of the design process is arranging loose gemstones in different compositions until the perfect balance emerges. Once the design feels right, I determine the most beautiful and structurally sound way to bring it to life. I also believe that fine jewelry should be beautiful from every angle. The reverse side of a piece deserves as much attention as the front, ensuring it is thoughtfully finished no matter how it is viewed. The completed pendant features a classic channel-set diamond frame surrounding a vibrant sapphire secured in six elegant claw prongs. It is suspended from the chain by a series of bezel-set diamonds, allowing the chain to drape naturally while the pendant moves independently. The result is graceful movement, exceptional comfort, and a timeless design that seamlessly transitions from everyday wear to special occasions.

Sometimes the most important project isn’t a redesign, it’s preserving a piece that holds a lifetime of memories. I have had the pleasure of working with this client and her family for many years. She is an extraordinary person whose generosity and commitment to her community are truly inspiring, making it especially meaningful to help care for jewelry that means so much to her. While volunteering one day, she felt something catch on her hand. Looking down, she realized with great alarm that the center diamond from her engagement ring was gone. Even more concerning, one of the prongs had broken away. She immediately retraced her steps and, remarkably, found the diamond. She brought the ring to the shop along with several other pieces in need of repair, but restoring her engagement ring was understandably our highest priority. Upon closer inspection, it became clear that the damage extended beyond the missing prong. Several of the crown prongs had developed cracks, as shown in the accompanying photographs. Damage of this nature can occur for a variety of reasons and often remains hidden until a failure occurs. Exposure to chlorine, for example, can weaken the alloys used in gold over time. Other possible causes include metal fatigue or imperfections created during the original casting process, such as trapped air or rapid cooling. These issues are typically impossible to detect until they become visible and are not necessarily the result of poor craftsmanship. This wedding set represented important milestones in her life. The engagement setting had been created to commemorate her tenth wedding anniversary, and the wedding band was added to celebrate her fifteenth. Together, the rings told the story of her marriage and held tremendous sentimental value. The damaged components are not repairable so we chose a solution that would provide greater long-term durability. The pear-shaped brilliant-cut center diamond was reset into a new platinum crown designed in a similar style, incorporating protective chevron prongs to better safeguard the delicate tip of the diamond. To complete the restoration, the wedding set was carefully separated so the engagement ring could be repaired. The new platinum crown was hand assembled, the diamond securely reset, and the rings were then precisely welded back together. The result is a beautifully restored wedding set that honors its history while providing the strength and security needed to be enjoyed for many years to come.

I have known this family for decades. They are kind, thoughtful, intelligent people, and it has been a privilege to work with them through many of life’s milestones. Every piece of jewelry purchased as a gift has always been chosen with great care, and the pieces they choose to repurpose often carry even deeper meaning. Their daughter has grown into an exceptional woman, carrying forward the same kindness, thoughtfulness, and grace that have long defined her family. I had the honor of creating the wedding bands for both her and her husband—classic, simple designs that suited them perfectly. For her engagement ring, inspiration came from a cherished family heirloom. Her grandmother owned an emerald and diamond ring that she had always admired. Today, that ring is worn and treasured by her mother, who loves it just as much. While emeralds possess extraordinary beauty, they are not always the most practical choice for an engagement ring intended for everyday wear. To honor the heirloom while creating a piece uniquely her own, we chose to reinterpret the design with a diamond center stone. Because quality was important to her, a certified natural oval brilliant-cut diamond was selected, complete with a laser-inscribed certificate number on the girdle for identification and authenticity. Working within an established budget, I recommended lab-grown diamonds for the accent stones. This allowed us to closely match the color and clarity of the center diamond while maximizing beauty and value throughout the design. Inspired by her grandmother’s ring, but thoughtfully updated with a few refinements, the finished piece captures the spirit and sentiment of the family heirloom while beginning a new chapter of its own. Crafted in 14k white gold, the ring features a certified natural oval brilliant-cut diamond center stone, accented by lab-grown round full-cut diamonds in prong settings and lab-grown baguette diamonds set in channels. The result is a timeless design that honors family history while creating new memories for generations to come.

They first came to me through a referral from his mother, who lives locally. As active-duty military personnel, they have traveled extensively around the world, making it especially meaningful that they entrusted me with this project. Their wedding set had been designed and crafted elsewhere, and it was beautifully executed. More importantly, it suited her perfectly, both elegant and distinctive. There was only one concern: the accent stones were opals. I have a deep appreciation for fine opals, and despite their small size, these were exceptional examples with beautiful color and character. However, opals are not ideal for the daily wear that engagement rings and wedding bands typically endure. The very structure that gives opals their remarkable play of color also makes them more vulnerable to damage over time. The challenge was to find a replacement stone that would honor the original design they loved while providing the durability needed for their active lifestyle. Because they were living out of the area, we worked together through email and eventually scheduled a virtual consultation to review potential options. During our “show and tell,” one choice quickly stood out: genuine Ceylon blue sapphires. The sapphires proved to be the perfect solution. Their vibrant color complemented the design beautifully, and they fit the existing settings as though the ring had been created specifically for them. The result preserved everything they loved about the original piece while enhancing its practicality for everyday wear. The finished ring is both stunning and enduring, a beautiful balance of thoughtful design, meaningful sentiment, and lasting craftsmanship.

I have had the pleasure of knowing her for several years and have completed a number of projects for both her and her family over time. She has a wonderful sense of humor and is always a joy to work with. As she prepared to move and began the process of downsizing and simplifying, she rediscovered a few forgotten pieces in her jewelry box, including a single huggie hoop earring. Her initial idea was to recreate the missing mate with a minor modification to the closure for improved comfort and wearability. However, after exploring the options, it became clear that fabricating an exact duplicate would be prohibitively expensive. We also searched extensively for a matching single earring, but no suitable replacement could be found. Rather than replicate the original design, we decided to reimagine the piece entirely. Using the original diamonds, which were beautifully graduated in size, we created a delicate cross stitch stud earring that feels both timeless and modern. The result is petite, elegant, and versatile enough for everyday wear while still offering plenty of sparkle. To complete the design, I supplied new 14k white gold settings along with silicone-backed earring backs for improved comfort and balance on the ear. Transforming an incomplete or forgotten piece into something fresh and wearable again is always deeply satisfying, especially when the final design so perfectly suits the client’s style.

She first found me online and connected with the stories and sentiment reflected in my work. From her home in Florida, she initially reached out by email, followed by a thoughtful phone conversation about a very special piece of jewelry. The bracelet held tremendous emotional value for her. It had been handmade by her son when he was a little boy. Now grown with a family of his own, the bracelet had become a meaningful reminder of an earlier chapter in their lives. With an important family memorial approaching for her late husband, she wanted to be able to wear the piece once again. Her original idea was to recreate the bracelet entirely in gold or silver. However, after listening to her story and understanding the significance of the original piece, I felt the better approach would be to preserve the existing identification plate itself and incorporate it into a newly redesigned bracelet. In doing so, we could maintain the authenticity and emotional connection of the original creation while making it wearable again. I presented several options for chain styles and clasps, and together we selected a classic silver curb link bracelet paired with a toggle clasp for both comfort and ease of wear. The greatest challenge was preserving the original plate while preventing further scratching and wear. To protect it, I carefully coated the surface in a clear acrylic resin, helping to stabilize and preserve it in its current condition for years to come. Projects like this are a reminder that meaningful jewelry is not defined by the value of its materials, but by the memories it carries. Preserving those memories is often the most rewarding part of the work.

I have known her and her family for many years and have celebrated more than a few birthdays with her. As an October-born woman, opal is her birthstone, and over the years she had received many beautiful opal jewelry gifts. Like many cherished pieces collected over a lifetime, some of these designs no longer reflected her personal style or fit comfortably into her everyday wardrobe. She visited the shop with her daughter, and together we began the exciting process of reimagining these sentimental pieces into something she would truly enjoy wearing again. We started with several sketches and gradually refined the possibilities, focusing on a design that would suit both her lifestyle and aesthetic preferences. She wears her hair in a bob, which leaves her ears visible, and she loves drop earrings with movement. They're elegant and expressive, but never overly ornate or fussy. Ultimately, we embraced a “less is more” approach. Each earring features two opals, individually linked and suspended from delicate ear wires, allowing them to move gracefully with the wearer. For this project, we worked with the same couple to create a second ring. One that more closely reflects her personal style. The design began with an existing ring (https://www.rweberjewelry.com/portfolio/moss-agate-makes-for-truly-unique-nature-inspired-engagement-ring/), which served as our foundation. She was drawn to the natural beauty of moss agate, so we retained it as the center stone while incorporating small diamond melee from her grandmother’s ring, adding a meaningful heirloom element to the piece. Her aesthetic is understated, tailored, and clean. This was an important consideration throughout the design process, which was thoughtfully guided by both her fiancé and myself. We selected a round moss agate and set it in a bezel, creating a continuous, unbroken circle that reinforces the simplicity of the design. Rather than using prongs like the CAD renderings, we refined the final piece by setting the smaller diamonds directly into the shoulders of the ring. This adjustment allowed for a more seamless and streamlined appearance. One of the advantages of CAD is the flexibility it provides to iterate and perfect a design before completion. As with the original ring we created for her, this piece was designed to accommodate a wedding band that can sit flush against it, preserving clean lines and a cohesive overall look.
