Hi there!
Welcome to my Doretta Designs page linking to my Etsy Shop! I’ll post work in progress and new jewelry pieces on this page (at a discount) before offering on my web site DorettaDesigns.com. If you are interested in a piece posted on this page, comment in the post or email me at [email protected].
I design and hand make one of a kind artisan jewelry from stones, gems and minerals I self collect or purchase from rock shops, gem and mineral shows, and from fellow rockhounds. I accept limited consignments. Check out my “Truly Texas” jewelry line! This line highlights jewelry crafted from gems and minerals from sourced in Texas. I am a lapidarist and rock hound, so many of my “Truly Texas” line offerings are stones I have found, cut, ground, polished and created into one of a kind jewelry!
I’m frequently asked how I got into making jewelry and what lead me to create Doretta Designs. As an answer, I offer the following:
For as long as I can remember I’ve picked up and loved rocks. Growing up, I always had shoe boxes filled with pretty rocks and other found objects. So much so, my mother gave me a special drawer in my dresser to put my treasures. My mother called me a “rock hound.”
As an adult, I have found that I like jewelry. I always wished I could make jewelry. Why not? My mother’s parents made jewelry and they called themselves rock hounds, too.
So, I did some research and gave it a try. Once I got the materials and supplies in hand, I was smitten. I was hooked.
I had no idea that making jewelry would light such a passion inside of me. My love of rocks and jewelry come together and brings a joy that I want to share with you. I make each piece by hand. I consider the color, form, and properties of each stone when designing my jewelry.
Doretta Designs was created after I offered several pieces for a silent auction for a fund raising event. I wanted to help this non-profit and asked if my work was appropriate for their event. This was the first time I’d shown pieces outside of a very small group of friends and family - to me, it was my first public showing. What surprised me was that two of the officers insisted on buying pieces that I’d brought as examples of my work - a third officer said that she’d wait for the auction to purchase her favorite piece! All three of the pieces I donated were sold at the event. It was this group of officers who first told me I should sell my work. Others soon joined in to encourage me and offer their expertise. So I’m proud to say that my business comes from friends and my love of craft!
I hope you will enjoy my parings of natural stones and minerals into beautiful, easy to wear, jewelry.
