Work has looked a little different this month.

In the beginning of October, I flew to NY to care for my mother as she underwent a medical procedure.

My sister and I spent everyday with her as she recovered in the hospital, and fortunately she is now back home🩵

At the hospital, I put up a string of cranes and decorated the windowsill with pieces my sister and I folded in my mother’s room, and the joy they brought people who came into her room was so nice to see too.

These past few weeks I transported my office to hospitals, a hotel, waiting rooms, and my mom’s couch. While it’s been a challenge, especially being away from my family for so long, I am incredibly grateful that I can still work while I care for my mother.

I appreciate the many well wishes and check-ins I have received, the orders that continue to come through to support my business, and the patience from my customers as I work to fulfill them.

While I will be in NY for a bit longer, I look forward to being back next month for all the upcoming holiday events! In the meantime, please visit the shops that carry my work! Check out my stockist list on my website mimisorigamis.com

I entered a nation-wide call by The Jeweler’s Saw and Art For The People Gallery and I’m so honored that my piece was accepted!

The exhibition is called Lyrical Jewelry - “a unique jewelry exhibition featuring 13 national jewelry artists who have designed and crafted pieces inspired by song lyrics, both mainstream and original.

The exhibition will run throughout the month of October, in tandem with Austin City Limits, bringing together music and jewelry in a celebration of creative expression and the stories that songs inspire.”

💫The opening reception is October 2nd and the exhibition will run through 10/30 at ART FOR THE PEOPLE GALLERY at Springdale General

Inspired by “Slipping Through My Fingers”by ABBA

“Slipping Through My Fingers” is a song by ABBA that describes a mother’s bittersweet regret of realizing how quickly her daughter has grown up, an experience that is shared by so many. While it’s originally written from the mother’s perspective, for me, this song speaks to my experience of being a sandwich caregiver to both my mother and my children.

The lyrics “slipping through my fingers” sway me in between these two distinct yet similar realities of watching both my children slip away towards growth and independence and my mother towards aging.

The individual origami components that make up each earring represent the passage of time and the decline that I have been witnessing: from a complex and dynamic shape, to a smaller, simpler shape, to one with holes where memories and experiences can fall through.

As a whole, the piece is representative of the shape of a neuron (messengers of the brain that allow us to think, feel, and move), with the starlike cell body that leads to the long axon (represented by the chain).

Everyone’s favorite origami crane magnet✨

These tiny cranes that symbolize peace, hope, and longevity in Japanese culture have a special place in my heart🩷

Anyone ever get hit with a sudden need to organize?

For me it comes in waves, and this past week I finally got some organizers for my supplies and papers.🗄️🗄️
With how small my materials are, even though I had everything organized in smaller containers, it was getting harder to see everything I had. After getting one for my supplies, I got another one for my washi paper!

I’m so so happy with how these turned out, and I’m grateful to have gotten this done as I’m prepping for the busy holiday season!🤩
It’s amazing how one change can make you feel much more organized!

This weekend, the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, AZ is hosting Experience Japan! 🇯🇵🎉🎶
