For 90 minutes we escaped the stress and chaos of our uncertain times by focusing on what supports us. So began Kathleen’s Tuesday night Zoom class. The wringing action of twists took on a different tone as we paid special attention to the supportive role that our extension, sternum lift, and shoulder blades can play in making revolved poses gentle and sustainable. Sometimes wall support served to calm our nerves and steady our balance. Kathleen’s voice soothed us into poses coaching us to pull in, extend, and turn a little more. The world is wringing us much like these Parivrtta Sthiti or Lateral Extensions. Perhaps, if we stay in the moment, focusing at every turn on what can support us, we can twist a little more without the pain or anguish many of us have experienced. The theory that the wringing is detoxifying and helps to bring fresh oxygenated blood to our spine is a hopeful idea— this practitioner wants to imagine all of this wringing of the nerve center of our world will ultimately shift us all into a new place, a healthier place. Learn what supports you with a little Iyengar Yoga. Still supportive. Still transformative. Still it.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Our studio will be closed until April 15th to encourage social distancing at the direction of the Mayor of Atlanta.

I hope you can use this time to deepen your practice. These are the times where we need it the most! This could mean asana, pranayama or study of the sutras. And we all have other tools that help us, like connecting virtually with friends or being outside in the fresh air and sunlight- even if it’s in our own back yards. And be in gratitude for tools like Zoom etc. where we can talk and see each other.

I am in the process of learning how to live stream classes over Zoom. We are all being challenged in our own ways! I will start with the following classes:

Level 1 Tuesday 6:00pm
https://us04web.zoom.us/j/740130125

Level 1 Wednesday 11:00am
https://us04web.zoom.us/j/795416112

50+ class Thursday 9:00am
https://us04web.zoom.us/j/926820738

Level 2 Thursday 11:00am
https://us04web.zoom.us/j/280669726

In the meantime, I would like to share with you sequences of classes I have taken in Pune. Some of these sequences come from my notes after class and others were transcribed from audio recordings. I am looking forward to listening to Geetaji’s voice from various years past and hope you will also find it nourishing and inspirational. I will let you know when I can which sequences were transcribed and which were written down after class.

Do your practice and be kind to yourself and others.

Love, Kathleen

In Kquvien’s Sunday morning class, we chanted Sutra 1.28 tajjapaḥ tadarthabhāvanam, which BKS Iyengar translates as “The mantra OM is to be repeated constantly, with feeling, realizing its full significance.”

In "Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali", BKS Iyengar explains that no words can be vocalized without the three syllables that make the sound AUM. It is considered to be the seed of all words and represents the union of the individual soul with the universal soul.

The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali is considered a yoga darsana, “vision of the soul,” or mirror, because yoga has the effect of enabling practitioners to observe the reflection of their thoughts and actions making corrections that guide them toward deeper observation of the inner self. It is no wonder why BKS Iyengar is so often quoted as saying “asana are my prayers”

After the chanting, we prepped and practiced experiencing deeper and deeper levels of opportuntities to awaken our pelvic floor and lower abdomen. We observed and reflected on our self talk, judgements, and actions. Kquvien said it's important to know we are getting stronger, even if we can not find the pose in our body that our mind wants to make happen (Lolasana where are you?), we have to learn to practice and let go --Abhyasa and vairagya, practice and detachment.

I found the lesson on Sutra 1.28 came in handy here. To detach from any judgement or disappointment simply repeat the word AUM again and again with reverence.

Thanks so much Kquvien what a treat to practice with my yoga family again.

Move over ballet barre. Want to learn how to articulate your hips and thighs come to Kquvien’s Sunday morning class. Her morning sequence made my back side fully aware of where it was falling short. She took simple standing poses like Utthita Trikonasana and Utthita Parsvokonasana to places that help us all remember how much of our body hasn’t been recognized and honored. That’s all thanks to BKS Iyengar who made it his life’s ambition to honor the more than 300 trillion cells in his body one millisecond at a time. Wonderful class Kquvien. Thanks Stillwater, you are Still it.
