For years I’ve said Laurel Lane would eventually grow into a lifestyle brand.

For a long time, I thought that meant constantly creating products and always having something new to sell. But the lifestyle part was never just about products. It was about life.

Watching the debrief really inspired this reflection. As a business owner, I understood the accountability she took, but what resonated with me was something deeper.

It made me realize something very clearly. I need to rest.

When you have a baby, your entire world changes. We give grace for so many things in life, but when someone gives life, people usually only see the beauty. They don’t always acknowledge the changes, the sacrifices, and the shifts that come with becoming a mother.

Most of us can’t just stop everything to rest. Real life doesn’t always allow that.

So I’m giving myself something I never truly allowed myself to have...

A maternity leave, even if it’s a little late.

For the next couple of months, you may not see me as much. I’m stepping back and moving a little slower.

My leave begins April 6th until May 30th.

However, the shop is still here! We’re still serving you, and I’m grateful for every single person who walks through those doors.

But for now, I’m allowing myself a moment to breathe.

Because the more we give each other grace, the easier it becomes to give ourselves grace too. 🤍

More on Substack! 🔗 in bio.

That first slow season made me think my business was tanking...but it wasn’t, I just didn’t know the cycles of retail.

Slow seasons are real, and yeah, they’re scary. But once you get past that first hit, you stop spiraling and learn to go with the flow.

Now I look at the quiet time as prep time, and I remind myself that it’s not failure, just a different pace. 🤍

Clearly, the questions get WILD out here 😂

(No, we can’t do permanent toe rings, but yes to bracelets and anklets that survive all your pool days!) 🤍

Happy Black History Month family! Welcome to episode 3 of ✨ “Did You Know That Was Black?” ✨

A short series where we highlight black jewelers and jewelry designers who changed the game.

Meet Bill Smith: the first Black jewelry designer to win a Coty Award (basically the fashion world’s Oscar).

Smith created bold, dramatic, full-body jewelry that blurred the lines between clothing and accessories.

By 1968, he became vice president of the second-largest jewelry firm in America, helping introduce African-inspired designs into high-end American jewelry.

Pioneers like Bill Smith paved the way for black-owned jewelry shops like Laurel Lane Jewelry to exist today.

This is your reminder to support Black jewelers. Not just this month, but every month.

A short series where we highlight black jewelers and jewelry designers who changed the game.

Meet Winifred Mason: the Harlem Renaissance jeweler, who is believed to be the first commercial Black jeweler in the United States.

Mason worked primarily in copper, drew inspiration from West Indian traditions, and never repeated a design.

Pioneers like Winifred Mason paved the way for black-owned jewelry shops like Laurel Lane Jewelry to exist today.

Happy Black History Month family! Welcome to ✨ “Did You Know That Was Black?” ✨

A short series where we highlight black jewelers and jewelry designers who changed the game.

First up: Art Smith the Afro-Caribbean modernist jeweler whose bold, sculptural pieces were made to move with you.

Born in Cuba, raised in Brooklyn, and featured in Vogue, he created wearable art from accessible materials like copper — making statement jewelry for more of us.

Because of pioneers like him, spaces like Laurel Lane Jewelry get to exist today.
Support Black jewelers. Always. 🖤
