Most guides tell you which Rolex dial color "goes with your outfit." Here's the version that actually matters if you're spending five figures.

Black: the neutral baseline, no premium either way.
Green: rare by design. The discontinued Hulk Submariner trades $2,000+ above comparable black-dial versions purely because of the dial.
Ice-blue: platinum exclusive. You literally cannot get that color anywhere else in the lineup.
Discontinued Oyster Perpetual colors (turquoise, coral): quietly appreciating now that Rolex stopped making them.

It matters more than most buyers realize. A standard Rolex service runs $800 to $1,600 for a full overhaul. Complex references like the Daytona can run $1,800 to $2,800+.

We check pre-owned Rolex prices every week. Not research — just part of running this business. Here's what 2026 actually looks like.

The 2021-2022 correction? Over. Most references settled into stable ranges by late 2024 and have held since.

What's new: discontinuation-driven repricing. The Pepsi GMT got pulled this year and is already tracking the same pattern the Hulk followed in 2020 — fast bump, some pullback, then a settle well above where it started.

And quietly, vintage Rolex from the 1960s-80s has had the strongest upward pressure of any category over the past two years. Nobody's talking about it as loudly as they should.

The Sea-Dweller exists because Rolex's own engineers hit a wall.

In the 1960s, saturation divers working with COMEX found their Submariner crystals were popping during decompression — helium had worked into the case during long dives with nowhere to go on the way back up. Rolex's fix: a helium escape valve and a case rated to 1,220 meters.

That's the watch serious divers actually wear. The Submariner became the one everyone else wears instead.

Rolex has never made the Day-Date in steel. Not once in seventy years.

Gold or platinum, no exceptions. That was the deliberate positioning from 1956, when the Day-Date became the first watch to spell out the full day of the week alongside the date. Eisenhower had one within a year of release. Every president since has worn one at some point — which is exactly how it earned the "Presidential" nickname.
