Because cultured pearls are organic and relatively soft, they require special care to last for generations. Keep your pearls glowing with these essential tips:

- The "Last On, First Off" Rule: Apply perfume, hairspray and cosmetics *before* putting on your pearls. These substances can eat away at the nacre and dull the luster.
- Wipe After Wearing: Perspiration and body oils can slowly damage pearls. Wipe them with a soft, clean cloth after each use to maintain their glow.
- Store Flat and Separate: Never store pearls in a tangle with diamonds or gold, which can easily scratch their surface. Store pearl strands flat; hanging them for long periods can stretch the silk.
- Restring strands: For frequently worn necklaces, have them restrung annually by a professional to ensure the silk cord remains strong and secure.
- Avoid Dry Areas & Heat: Never store pearls in an airtight safe or near a hot light source. Lack of moisture and exposure to heat can dehydrate the gems, causing them to appear dull and "chalky.”

May’s mystical birthstone has been a favorite for thousands of years. Save our easy guide to know how to pick the best emerald:

COLOR: Pure green and bluish green gems are more desirable than yellowish green ones.
CLARITY: An emerald’s inclusion scene is sometimes called its “jardin” or garden in French. Many emeralds contain fissures that can be hidden from view by filling with oils and resin (see Treatment below).
CUTTING STYLE: The emerald cut is the most popular cut style, characterized by a rectangular or square shape, with cut corners and tiers of step facets.
CARAT WEIGHT: Emeralds are less dense than diamonds and appear larger for the same carat weight.
TREATMENT: Many emeralds have fissures that are filled with oils or resins. GIA identifies filler type and classifies this clarity enhancement as Minor (F1), Moderate (F2) or Significant (F3). Gems with Significant enhancement may have durability issues. Also watch out for dyed gems imitating emerald.
CARE: Emeralds should never be placed in ultrasonic or steam cleaners, which may damage their filler. Instead, clean them with warm, soapy water and a toothbrush.

The beryl family is packed with gem-world celebrities including emerald, aquamarine and morganite. Then there’s the rare and mysterious maxixe beryl and red beryl, plus more common beauties like heliodor, goshenite and green beryl.

Beryl is allochromatic, meaning it's colorless in its purest form. It gets its color from trace elements or radiation.

- Green beryl gets its pale green hue from iron.
- Emerald glows green thanks to chromium and vanadium.
- Aquamarine gets its serene blue hue from iron.
- Maxixe turns deep blue from radiation, but its color can fade!
- Red Beryl owes its rich red hue to manganese.
- Morganite blushes pink from manganese.
- Goshenite is pure, colorless beryl, sometimes with trace elements but not enough to add color.
- Heliodor’s golden yellow comes from iron.

Which beryl variety is your favorite?

Emeralds are beautiful but require special care due to their natural inclusions and common clarity treatments. Here are a few tips to keep your emerald jewelry shining:

- Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaning, which can damage emeralds and remove oils or fillers used to enhance clarity. Instead, clean with warm, soapy water and a soft brush.
- Protect from heat. Sudden temperature changes can damage the stone or its treatments.
- Protect from harsh chemicals such as bleach, chlorine, ammonia and alcohol, which can damage fillers.
- Store carefully. Keep emerald jewelry separate from other gemstones like diamonds to prevent scratches.
