💰🪙 Silver, Copper, and a Little Bit of Treasure-Hunting Fun! 🪙💰

Some people collect stamps. Some collect baseball cards.

I collect weighty little pieces of history.

Spent some time organizing part of my precious metals collection today. American Silver Eagles, silver rounds, fractional silver bars, copper rounds, and a few unique pieces from various mints all tucked into their new homes.

There’s something satisfying about holding real, tangible assets in your hand. No passwords. No batteries. No software updates. Just beautifully crafted pieces of metal with history, artistry, and intrinsic value.

Plus, let’s be honest… stacking shiny things is a lot more fun than looking at a number on a screen. 😄

Anyone else collect silver, copper, coins, or other treasures?

1872 | $3 Gold Indian Princess 🪙 (R)evolution in Currency Object # 97 ANA 2003.10.3

The $3 gold coin, first introduced in 1854, was designed by James B. Longacre during a period of expanding gold coinage following the California Gold Rush. Its distinctive obverse shows Liberty wearing a feathered headdress - an image long used as a symbolic representation of America on paper money. The reverse wreath combines corn, cotton, wheat and to***co to represent the agricultural strengths of both North and South.

Despite its artistic appeal, the denomination never gained wide circulation. With only 2,000 coins struck this year, it remained a niche issue, overshadowed by more practical gold denominations. Most $3 gold coins circulated lightly - or were saved as curiosities from the start. Its continued production only at the Philadelphia Mint, even as western branch mints struck large quantities of other gold coins, reflects the denomination’s limited commercial role.

💬 Why do you think the Mint continued producing a denomination that never became widely useful in everyday commerce?

1867 S | Liberty Seated half dollar 🪙 (R)evolution in Currency Object # 92 ANA 1989.151.284

This 1867 S half dollar, struck at the San Francisco Mint, was the first U.S. silver coin by date and mintmark to exceed one million pieces in mintage. Half dollars were the backbone of retail transactions at the time, which explains why most surviving examples show heavy circulation.

The Seated Liberty design, created by Christian Gobrecht, depicts Liberty seated next to a shield, holding a staff topped with a liberty cap. The overall message balances symbols of national authority with those of personal freedom. Introduced in 1836, the design appeared across multiple silver denominations and remained in use for more than 50 years, making it one of the longest-running motifs in U.S. coinage. Its classical pose reflects the young nation’s desire to associate itself with the ideals of ancient republics such as Rome.

💬 Why might the first million-plus mintage silver coin come from the branch Mint, San Francisco, rather than the original Mint in Philadelphia?
