Lisu Cultural Heritage Center (LCHC)

Lisu Cultural Heritage Center (LCHC) is the first place in Chiang Mai where visitors can view Lisu culture and heritage in all its varied aspects: ritual, music, livelihood, handicraft, and costume. In addition, the center holds a treasure trove of archival photographs of ethnic Lisu, the field notes of an anthropologist studying a particular Lisu village in C

hiang Rai province, as well as other documents related to the Lisu. The Lisu are one of the ethnic groups (hill tribes) in northern Thailand. They mostly live in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, and Tak provinces. The Lisu population all over the globe numbers about a million. There are two different groups among the Lisu, the flowery and the black. The flowery Lisu are mostly based in Thailand, whereas the black are based in China, Burma, and India. The differences between these Lisu groups are based on language, costume, and religion. Ethnic costumes

Highlights of a visit to the center include the multi-ethnic costumes on display, particularly Lisu women’s costumes. Visitors can observe the evolution of women’s costumes from 1972 to 2000. In addition, the center displays the distinctive embroidery of the Lisu: dancing tassels, leggings, traditional shoulder bags, aprons, silver designs and head decorations. Handmade products

The LCHC is dedicated to promoting and preserving Lisu handicrafts. Visitors can buy handicrafts made by villagers, especially those created by older ladies who painstakingly make the very beautiful traditional Lisu bags, a process done entirely by hand. Many of the handicrafts now available for purchase have been in steep decline in recent years and the LCHC hopes to revive these skills, breathing new life into traditional styles.

Thanks so much to my Thai poet friend for her endless support on the revival of Lisu handicrafts. It means a lot to several women who have been involving with this project.

Their lives are more bearable because of the value you have given to their work.

On 11th November, I received a phone call while working behind the computer.

It was from a Japanese woman who spoke English a little bit. She called and asked if the Lisu Center was opened and if she could visit. I asked where she was and she said at the house/gate. I went out to welcome her at the gate.

I asked how she found out about this place and she said a Japanese friend who lived in Bangkok and who used to visit the center too. He recommended her to visit the center. I tried to think who that person was but could not remember. But thanks to him for introducing the center to her.

On 12th November, I welcomed another Japanese woman.

It was through my blinded Japanese friend who works closely with Lisu people in Phrao, who recommended her to visit the center.

It was because of her I became with one Japanese cartoon called Kiki, 1989 Japanese animated fantasy film. She said Otome’s memorial room, the atmosphere, reminded her of that film.

Thanks Yoshimi Horiuchi for recommending her to visit the center. And thanks to her as well for the support on the book and Lisu handicraft.

A visit to the Consulate of India Chiang Mai, to donate the book and understand more about India from a knowledgeable and experienced Consul.

The Consulate also bought a few copies of the book to distribute it to some institutes in India.

I asked the Consul about life of Lisu people in India. The more I listened to him, the more I wished to travel there and see if there is some connection between us at all and what would that be.

Thanks to the Consul and the Local Consular & Public Relations Executive for a great conversation and time.

Following is the post by the Consulate. Consul India Chiang Mai

Warm welcome to Ms Mimi Saeju from Lisu Cultural Heritage Centre, Chiang Mai, at the Consulate of India!

Ms Mimi Saeju, a proud member of the Lisu tribe, was received by Consul of India, Mr. Pranav Ganesh, who appreciated her work in preserving Lisu culture and heritage. She presented the Consul with a copy of the anthropological work "Upheavals in Lisu Hinterland", written by the late Otome Klein Hutheesing, a Dutch lady who married into the distinguished Hutheesing family in India and foster mothered Ms. Saeju.

The Lisu tribe is one of the many ethnic groups inhabiting the hill regions of Northern Thailand. What makes the Lisu unique is that they are the only hill tribe from Northern Thailand with an in-situ population in India, highlighting the historical and cultural ties between our nations.

Echoing PM Narendra Modi's focus on tribal development and the upcoming Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas on 15th November, the Consulate of India, Chiang Mai, is committed to strengthening bonds with all hill tribes in North Thailand, fostering greater understanding and cooperation. We aim to reach out and engage with these communities, celebrating our shared heritage and promoting mutual respect.

Let's continue to nurture the connections between India and Thailand, rooted in history, culture, and friendship!

A visit to École française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO), to donate the book and explore their huge library.

I was very happy when they showed me a copy of the first book of Otome that she wrote in 1990. If you are interested in reading the two books written by her, please visit this library, where you will find more interesting books in a very quiet and peaceful environment.

Thanks to the director for the time he had spent with me, introducing me to the library and the librarian and sharing his experience meeting with Michael Vickery in Cambodia.

Thanks to the librarian and Otome’s old friend Louis Gabaude for guiding me to the library and explained how their books were transported. I actually never thought about that kind of lift just for the books. 😌

Book review by a Canadian friend.
——

“Upeheavals in Lisu Hinterland” opens a window into the world of Lisu life. For a Westerner, and one who has visited a Lisu village, this book created a bridge to understand these people beyond what I could observe from spending a few days in their company. Otome brings to life the touching stories, their ways of seeing their world, and the traditions which are in danger as the modern world impinges on their borderless homes. It’s a tragedy and hard to put down, even after finishing the book”.
