Not Every Blue Tourmaline Is a Paraíba.
The defining characteristic of a true Paraíba Tourmaline is not simply its blue color—it’s the extraordinary neon blue glow created primarily by copper (Cu).
Copper gives Paraíba its unmistakable electric appearance, allowing the gem to appear as if it is glowing from within. This vibrant internal luminosity is what has made Paraíba one of the world’s most valuable gemstones.
In contrast, many of the newly discovered blue tourmalines are colored predominantly by iron (Fe). While they may display attractive blue or greenish-blue hues, their appearance is often much closer to a traditional Indicolite Tourmaline—deeper, darker, and lacking the vivid neon effect that defines the finest Paraíba.
This is why simply seeing a blue tourmaline—or even detecting traces of copper—is not enough. The real question is:
What is actually creating the color?
If iron is the dominant chromophore and the stone lacks the signature neon glow, then, from a market perspective, it should not be considered true Paraíba-quality material.
The market has never paid premium prices for the word “copper.” It pays for the breathtaking neon color that only exceptional copper-bearing tourmalines can display.
