A Zambian emerald exists because two very different types of rock met beneath the earth. In the Kafubu region, emeralds formed near contact zones between pegmatites and talc-magnetite schist. These rocks supplied different chemical elements that had to come together under the right geological conditions. Without this rare encounter, there would be no emerald.

The name Kafubu is now inseparable from Zambian emeralds. Most of Zambia’s historic emerald deposits are located near the Kafubu River, in the southern part of the country’s famous Copperbelt. This region became known for something very different from copper: exceptional green crystals hidden inside ancient metamorphic rocks.

Today, Kafubu is recognised as one of the world’s great emerald-producing regions.

Zambian emeralds were discovered in 1928, but their commercial story did not truly begin until the 1970s.

For more than four decades, the deposits remained largely undeveloped. When significant production finally began, Zambia introduced the international market to emeralds with impressive colour, size and character.
