What’s the difference between “conflict-free” and “responsibly sourced” diamonds? 💎✨

Many people think these terms mean the same thing, but there’s an important distinction:

“Conflict-free” diamonds meet the Kimberley Process standards, ensuring they don’t fund certain types of conflict. However, this is just the starting point.

“Responsibly sourced” diamonds go further—they consider ethical labor practices, environmental impact, community benefits, and transparency throughout the supply chain.

When choosing a diamond, look beyond “conflict-free” and ask about the broader responsibility behind your gem. True ethical jewelry means caring for people and the planet at every step. 🌍💍

💎 Update: New EU Traceability Rules for Diamonds from January 2026

Starting January 2026, the next phase of mandatory diamond traceability applies in the EU. The goal: effective sanctions against Russian diamonds and more transparency in the supply chain.

What’s new?

• From January 1, 2026, importers of natural, polished diamonds of 0.5 carats or more must submit a Due Diligence Statement on Diamond Origin with their customs declaration.

• Importers must prove that the diamonds are not of Russian origin – including supply chain documentation and supporting evidence.

• The originally planned mandatory digital traceability platform is still postponed. Authorities currently accept formal declarations with standard documents.

• The 0.5-carat threshold applies to both rough and polished diamonds.

• For rough diamonds, the stricter rules from March 2025 still apply: Kimberley Process certificates for mixed shipments must list all countries of origin.

Practical tip:

Use the AWDC guidance and make sure every shipment is accompanied by the standardized Due Diligence Statement.

These changes affect not only large traders but also smaller jewelers and everyone working with diamonds in the EU. Now is the right time to adapt your processes and documentation!
