Una Artesana ☀️ Inspired by Filipino myth & folklore
🌿 Sharing our ancestors’ stories through jewelry
🤲🏼 Handmade in Cebu, Philippines 🇵🇭 Hi!
(1)

I'm Susanne, maker behind Una Artesana. You might also know me as the jewelry designer behind my namesake brand, Susanne Verallo.

I've always wanted to be a jeweler, as in someone who actually makes jewelry, not just design. I'd planned on taking metal smithing classes last year, but unfortunately couldn't push through because of the pandemic. Then I thought to myself, just because I couldn

't do metal smithing, that didn't mean I couldn't learn alternative jewelry-making techniques. So I started dabbling with the beads I had at home and eventually found out about bead weaving. I taught myself different techniques through video tutorials and started designing my own pieces from there. The Philippines, my home, is an endless source of inspiration to me. While I was teaching myself bead weaving, I was also researching and learning more about our myths and legends. Eventually I brought the two together and started creating pieces inspired by Filipino folklore. That eventually became the first volume of jewelry, titled "Langit".

Una Artesana has since evolved from personal project to small business. I plan on learning more jewelry-making techniques and telling more of our ancestors' stories through meticulously handcrafted jewelry. Thank you for coming along with me on this journey!

• MATERIAL & TECHNIQUE

For Una Artesana’s first two collections, I explore bead-weaving as a jewelry-making technique with glass beads, the material I had available during lockdown. There are two types of bead-weaving methods: loom weaving (left) and off-loom weaving (right). The method used depends on what the design calls for. All the earrings are done off-loom with a combination of different bead weaving stitches, while the necklaces are done on the loom. Depending on the complexity of the design, it can take anywhere between 2 to 8 hours for me to complete a single piece as everything is done completely by hand.

✨ Which Talisman calls to you?

☀️ The Araw Talisman represents the sun, which symbolized life and renewal to our ancestors. It was the warrior god, Apolaki, the goddess of the dawn, Hanan. This Talisman is a reminder that the strength, courage, and enduring hope of our ancestors reside in you.

🌙 The Buwan Talisman represents the moon, a symbol of change. To our ancestors she was the goddess Mayari, who ruled the night, and Kulalaying, the goddess of prosperity. This Talisman welcomes fortune and potential as you navigate through the changes in life.

🌟 The Bituon Talisman represents the stars, which guided our ancestors as they sailed the seas by night. They were the guiding lights of the goddess Lisuga, and the evening star, Tala. This Talisman offers you the guidance of our ancestors and urges you to trust your intuition.

“Sarili”, 2025
Brass, glass beads, thread, satin

My jewelry honors and celebrates Filipino culture. As my social media following grew, I began to be seen as a cultural authority, yet I often feel like an imposter. Colonialism shaped my upbringing. I spoke English growing up, consumed Western media, and barely knew my mother tongue. I knew next to nothing about our folklore until I started my brand. I love my heritage, but what I share online can often feel performative.

This facepiece is inspired by precolonial facial tattoos, which were reserved for the fiercest of warriors. They say sharing yourself online is brave, but as I post, I wonder: is my cultural identity truly mine, or is it just mask?

I created this face piece for .dvizh’s open call for their exhibit, Selling Face. The theme of the exhibition examines an artist’s relationship with social media, how we often have to create online personas to promote our work.

Sarili was selected for the exhibition at Munich Jewellery Week 2026.

Would you believe this was not only the first art jewelry piece I ever made, but also the first metal piece I forged on my own in my new home studio?? Wild!

It’s been a month since and I’m still reeling from the experience!

I first saw .dvizh’s open call for their exhibit, Selling Face, last September. The theme was about how, in the age of social media, artists have to constantly market ourselves online, creating online personas as masks to sell our work. That really resonated with me and I knew I had to give it a shot.

Art jewelry is something I’ve been interested in for a few years now, but I’d never made anything like it before. What’s more, I’d never created something as complex as a mask, let alone a metal one. Up till then I’d only ever made small pieces like earrings in guided workshops. And on top of that, I’d only started setting up my metal smithing workshop just some weeks prior, but it was just the barebones of a functioning studio. So taking this project on was… a LOT 😅

My piece is inspired by precolonial Filipino warriors’ tattoos, and it’s a reflection on my post-colonial upbringing and how it’s affected my work as an artist. It’s the most personal, most vulnerable piece I’ve ever made. I didn’t expect it to be selected, I just knew I had to make this piece real. So when I got that acceptance email? I was over the moon!

It was an incredible experience to be exhibiting alongside such talented artists from around the world, and to be able to share a piece of myself and my culture on an international stage. I’ll never forget it.

Thank you to Collective DVIZH for making “Sarili” a part of Selling Face ❤️

Would you believe this all started from a bag of old beads? Hi, I’m Susanne, the artist and maker behind Una Artesana, and I make jewelry inspired by precolonial Philippines.

So much has changed since I first picked up a beading needle in 2020, but one thing remains the same: this space and these jewels will always be a celebration of what it means to be Filipino.
