NEWS FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK
Welcome to my first online fortnightly News from the Mayor’s Desk. I hope you enjoy hearing about my recent appointments and activities, and I invite your feedback.
On Wednesday 18 September, Mackenzie District Mayor Anne Munro, Timaru District Mayor Nigel Bowen and I gave a strong message at the Environment Canterbury (ECan) Representation Review Submission Hearing that it is vital South Canterbury retains its current two Councillors, rather than their current preferred option of two Councillors covering the entire Mid and South Canterbury constituency (Ashburton south). We signaled at this hearing we fully intend to fight this at a higher level should ECan choose to ignore our submission and retain their option of a numbers driven representation rather than geographically/land mass driven. Anne, Nigel and I are united in the need to retain a strong voice and effective representation for our districts at our Regional Council.
On Thursday 19 September I enjoyed meeting and chatting with the six young participants of the Youth Employability Programme, run by our Mayors Taskforce for Jobs Employment Coordinator, Lisa Dobson. This programme is doing great things working with young people preparing them for future employment, and I fully endorse Lisa’s work in this area.
Later that day, Jakki Guilford of Community Link joined with me in a remote meeting with a senior Intercity staff member as we fought for the return of the Waimate township stop in their Dunedin to Christchurch routes. Losing this stop in our township is a huge concern to the many users of this service who do not drive, or have the ability to travel out to the collection/drop off point at the State Highway 1 Waimate turnoff at Nosh. Jakki and I received a strong message the change was due to Intercity’s driver time restrictions, so I will continue to work with Community Link to combat difficulties for people using this service.
Last Friday I was involved in an interviewing panel for director vacancies on the Alpine Energy Board. Our Council, as a shareholder, remains committed to working with Alpine Energy Ltd as they negotiate through their recent difficulties and move towards returning much-needed dividends. Alpine Energy have recognised the affect their error has had and will have on our returns, and accordingly put on hold all non-allocated community donations in the short term.
Other minor activities over the past two weeks included the occasional JP work of authorising documents and also a meeting with our Waimate representative on the Aoraki Foundation, Tony Alden. Tony lobbies on our district’s behalf for funding from this charitable organisation, and I appreciate his work in this area.
We’d love to see you at next week’s Open Workshop – our topics are an update from Chorus on how they plan to retire their existing copper network, an annual presentation from Community Link to update us on their work and activities. We’re also discussing Council’s draft Asset Management Plans (water supplies, sewerage and stormwater) in preparedness for auditing. We’re meeting in person at the Waimate Event Centre with a link available via Microsoft Teams by emailing [email protected].
Hopefully, the weather stays fine this weekend and you get the chance to enjoy our district’s beautiful spring parks and outdoor spaces.
