Meet Tristan van Schalkwyk — vineyard manager at Mount Brown Estates and a proud part of the North Canterbury wine story. 🍇

After graduating from Lincoln University with a degree in viticulture and oenology, Tristan made the move to our region and never looked back.

North Canterbury may be one of NZ’s smaller wine regions, but as Tristan puts it, “The pride and love that everyone in the valley shows to their work and the wines being created is very evident.”

He’s a fan of our Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and Rieslings — but if he had to choose a bottle (or three), here’s what he’s reaching for:
🍷 Mount Brown Pinot Gris 2024
🍷 Crater Rim ‘From the Ashes’ Chardonnay 2022
🍷 The Bone Line Waimanu Pinot Noir 2021

This is our people. Our place. Our wine.

Exciting to see our region featured by the amazing on .insideburgundy 🍷✨

She highlights how North Canterbury’s wine scene, nearly 45 years in the making, has truly come into its own over the past decade—thanks to a passionate community of small, premium producers. From iconic names like Pegasus Bay to newer stars like Dancing Water and Vita Wines, the region is bursting with wines that reflect both place and personality.

Huge thanks to Jane for the write-up! 🙌 To read more, head to insideburgundy.com 💻

The smell of fermentation is in the air in North Canterbury 〰️
Harvest is in full swing across the region, and that means it’s time to monitor those fermentations.

This photo shows a wine sample being tested with a hydrometer — a tool winemakers use to measure Brix, which tells us how much sugar is left in the juice as it ferments into wine. As the Brix level drops, we know the sugars are being converted into alcohol — a key step in the winemaking process. 📸

Introducing lower alcohol wine: Wildlife TB943 2023. Bright, light, red and best served chilled. 9.7% alcohol with aromas of redcurrant, graphite, and hints of liquorice. Swipe for a perfect food paring. 📸
Charcuterie and cheese: soft cheeses and cold Italian meats would be the ultimate autumn combo with this light chilled red. Enjoy.
