Small business ownership is as complicated as it is fun: you're the boss, the employee, the marketing team, the delivery driver, the accountant and the customer service.

…and somehow also expected to be fully operational 365 days a year.

Keeping the balance on these times can be hard. Splitting the time between work and family when flu season is hitting hard (yes New Zealand winter - we are looking at you)
But we're still here. 💚

Agates are an amazing and versatile - You can't believe the colours and patterns you can find all around the world!

This beauty is a prime example of agates you find in Canterbury, New Zealand✨️

Never seen one of these....

A while back on our explorations we came across loads of see glass, sea shells, shark tooth and this!

Beercanite
Sometimes called as Fools Silver, this humorously named formation is literally made out of beer cans.
It forms when people throw cans in bonfires or fire pits that then washes out in the sea. Later it comes back to the beach thrown around with the waves.
The melted aluminium tumbles into a lightweight, silvery, metal blob that is smoothed by sand and water.
Though it cant be used for carving, we are going to embrace this find and make something cool out of it!

Greenstone and greyhounds? Why not?!

Our greyhound may be the star of the photoshoot, but she is just one of the few furry faces that make our every day lives a little more entertaining.
From curious noses checking on new projects to quiet companions keeping us company while we carve, life wouldn't be the same without them.

And yes... every now and then, they don't mind showing off one of our hand-carved greenstone pieces too. Though treats are a must! 💚

Life in our workshop is rarely quiet!

We're lucky to share it with furry companions who keep us company throughout the day.
Every now and then, one of our four-legged "inspectors" wanders in to supervise the latest work, test the set up, or simply make sure everything is up to standard. 🐾

Does your pet like to "help" when you're trying to get things done? We'd love to hear about your own little workplace supervisor! ❤️

Rhodonite- the pink beauty 💗

New Zealand Rhodonite is one of the latest upcoming stones in carving. Its not wonder we get asked about this all the time!

Its color ranges from soft to brownish pink encased with black. Its often the luck of the draw how much pink you find, but if youre lucky you'll get something like we have!

There's only few places you can find it in New Zealand, which are Otago and Southern Alps region, both in the South Island.
Sometimes you might find some odd bits and bobs washed up at different beaches. We know some people have found rhodonite in Canterbury at Birdlings Flat - us included!

Rhodonite is slightly softer stone (5.5 to 6.5 in the hardness scale), in comparison to pounamu ( 6 to 6.5), which makes it very easy to work on.
We often do different style pendants and even tokis, but especially hearts from rhodonite are our favourites 🩷

Getting inspired by the old creations ✨️

Watch out! We have been on the memory lane - getting inspired by the work done on the early days when things where new and hands were figuring out the basics ⚒️

Like this piece from beautiful Marsden Flower Jade- there's lot of good memories tied to this piece. Just the fact we were lucky to have such an amazing stone to carve, brings a smile on our faces.
