Working from the beautiful Kapiti Coast in the picturesque region of Raumati South, Caren and Derek Ashford combine their passion for jewellery design and Hot fused Glass creations ,drawing inspiration from the scenic colours of their surroundings. Caren initially discovered her creative side over 10 years ago when becoming confined to a power chair and began designing and making jewellery as a di

straction for the pain in her hands. As her hands started to deteriorate Derek stepped in to take over the production work. Together they make an impressive team, with Caren opening up to her creativity combining her eye for colour and texture and constant exploration of different materials and Derek making the components for her designs. They are particularly inspired by New Zealand glass . The pair discovered fused glass just over 3 years ago and have passionately experimented with various glasses and materials to create the most charming designer pieces. Caren and Derek work right throughout the year but “peak” in time for the Kapiti Arts Trail in November every year where they put on an exciting display of all their new designs including Caren’s traditional beaded and filigree masterpieces pieces and Derek’s artistic use of chainmaille.
