We are proud to present Clare Reilly’s upcoming new show titled ‘Luscious – 50 Years in Paint’, a milestone exhibition marking five decades as an exhibiting artist.

Celebrating the sensuous joy of painting, this breathtaking new body of work showcases everything we love about Clare’s art: an exuberance of colour and detail, and an extraordinary eye for the beauty of our environment. Lush forests, moments of calm and distinctive native birdlife come alive in immersive, meditative paintings that capture the diversity and vitality of the New Zealand landscape.

Alongside Clare Reilly’s paintings, the exhibition will also feature metal sculpture by Ran Turner. Translating the elegance of line drawings into three dimensions, Ran’s work creates a compelling contrast with Clare’s vibrant paintings.

Join us on Saturday 31 October from 11am for the opening of ‘Luscious – 50 Years in Paint’. Bold, intriguing, and intricately detailed, ‘Rest in Paradise’ by Christchurch printmaker Ben Reid is part of his larger body of work on view in our current exhibition, ‘THREE’. Ben’s visual language is uniquely his own, bringing together historical references, symbolism and a distinctly contemporary perspective.

Ben has shared the following narrative for ‘Rest in Paradise’:

This work draws on the practice of Hans Burgkmair, a pioneering Northern European printmaker known for his early experiments with chiaroscuro woodcut. His prints often imagined unfamiliar lands and creatures, blurring the line between observation and speculation.

Continuing to explore the extinction of New Zealand’s revered Huia, ‘Rest in Paradise’ takes inspiration from a taxidermy specimen posed in a diving position. The upside-down imagery reflects the misunderstandings that can arise when we try to make sense of worlds beyond our own knowledge.

Ribbons and banners weave through the composition, exploring ideas of authority, colonial perception and the ultimately unsuccessful attempts to preserve the Huia. — Ben Reid

Timaru-based painter Brent Forbes rounds out the trio of artists featured in ‘THREE’, our latest exhibition.

A long-standing exhibitor with our Gallery, Brent is known for his atmospheric abstract works inspired by the meeting of sea, sky and land. For ‘THREE’, he takes a new direction, stepping away from his familiar acrylics to explore two collections of small-scale paintings on paper in watercolour and ink.

Working on a more intimate scale, these pieces continue Brent’s exploration of landscape through colour, line, tone and the fluidity of the medium.

We love experimenting with the apps and tools that allow you to place art into virtual spaces. They’re not only fun, but a useful way to imagine how an artwork might look and feel beyond the gallery wall - and, perhaps, in your own home.

Here, we’ve been playing with art by local printmaker Josh Bashford - all works pictured are currently on show in our latest exhibition, ‘THREE’. These virtual renders give us a glimpse of just how effortlessly Josh’s woodcut works can sit within a range of different interiors.
