Most people think they're choosing the carving.
In my experience...
They're choosing the stone.
Time and time again, I've watched someone walk past an entire cabinet of pounamu and stop at one piece.
Not because of the design.
Not because of the price.
Not even because of the meaning attached to the carving.
Because something about that stone speaks to them.
And when you've spent years collecting, carving, studying, and working with pounamu, you start to understand why.
No two pieces are ever the same.
Not just on the outside.
On the inside too.
These images are magnified views from different pieces of pounamu.
Look closely and you'll see entirely different worlds.
- Different colours.
- Different grain structures.
- Different inclusions.
- Different fibre patterns.
- Different levels of tightness and translucency.
Some are soft and flowing.
Some are bold and dramatic.
Some carry deep, earthy greens.
Others seem to glow from within.
Each stone has its own āhua.
Its own character.
Its own story.
And perhaps that's why different people are drawn to different pieces.
Because we're all carrying different stories too.
Different seasons.
Different challenges.
Different hopes for where life may be taking us next.
While we often connect with pounamu through its symbolism, many people are drawn to a piece for reasons they can't fully explain.
I've lost count of how many times someone has picked up a piece and said:
"I don't know why... but this is the one."
And honestly?
That's usually the piece that goes home with them.
Not because it was the most expensive.
Not because it was the most popular.
But because something resonated.
The stone speaks before the mind catches up.
Perhaps that's why pounamu has always felt different to me.
It's never been about finding the "perfect" piece.
It's about finding the piece that feels like it was waiting for you all along.
I'm curious...
When you've been drawn to a piece of pounamu, was it the colour?
The meaning?
Or something you simply couldn't explain?
👇 I'd love to hear your experience.
