Most people think they're choosing the carving.

In my experience...
They're choosing the stone.

Time and time again, I've watched someone walk past an entire cabinet of pounamu and stop at one piece.

Not because of the design.
Not because of the price.
Not even because of the meaning attached to the carving.

Because something about that stone speaks to them.

And when you've spent years collecting, carving, studying, and working with pounamu, you start to understand why.

No two pieces are ever the same.
Not just on the outside.
On the inside too.

These images are magnified views from different pieces of pounamu.

Look closely and you'll see entirely different worlds.

- Different colours.
- Different grain structures.
- Different inclusions.
- Different fibre patterns.
- Different levels of tightness and translucency.

Some are soft and flowing.

Some are bold and dramatic.

Some carry deep, earthy greens.

Others seem to glow from within.

Each stone has its own āhua.
Its own character.
Its own story.

And perhaps that's why different people are drawn to different pieces.

Because we're all carrying different stories too.

Different seasons.
Different challenges.
Different hopes for where life may be taking us next.

While we often connect with pounamu through its symbolism, many people are drawn to a piece for reasons they can't fully explain.

I've lost count of how many times someone has picked up a piece and said:

"I don't know why... but this is the one."

And honestly?

That's usually the piece that goes home with them.

Not because it was the most expensive.
Not because it was the most popular.

But because something resonated.

The stone speaks before the mind catches up.

Perhaps that's why pounamu has always felt different to me.

It's never been about finding the "perfect" piece.

It's about finding the piece that feels like it was waiting for you all along.

I'm curious...

When you've been drawn to a piece of pounamu, was it the colour?

The meaning?

Or something you simply couldn't explain?

👇 I'd love to hear your experience.

Some seasons of life aren’t meant to be rushed.

They’re meant to be grown through.

And that’s often why people find themselves drawn to the Koru at very specific moments in life.

Inspired by the unfurling fern frond, the Koru is widely associated throughout te ao Māori with growth, renewal, new beginnings, and the unfolding journey of life.

Not instant transformation.

Real transformation.

The kind that happens quietly beneath the surface.

One choice at a time.
One lesson at a time.
One season at a time.

Over the years, I’ve noticed that many people who are drawn to a Koru are moving through some kind of shift within themselves.

A new chapter.
Healing.
Motherhood.
Loss.
Growth.

Coming home to themselves again, after giving so much of their energy to everyone else.

Because becoming isn’t always loud.

Sometimes it looks like softening.

Trusting yourself again.

Beginning again, even when you don’t have every answer yet.

To me, that is the beauty of the Koru.

It reminds us that growth does not need to be forced to be powerful.

Have you ever had a season of life quietly reshape who you were becoming?

Not every season of life asks for softness.
Some ask for strength.

I’ve often found that the people most drawn to the Hei Toki are standing at a threshold of some kind.

Stepping into leadership.
Holding greater responsibility.
Navigating change.

Choosing to move through life with more intention, direction, and certainty in who they are.

Inspired by the traditional adze once used by Māori master carvers, builders, and navigators, the toki became associated with strength, capability, determination, and purposeful action.

It represented the people trusted to shape the world around them with their own hands.

The ones called to build.
To guide.
To protect.
To create.

A Hei Toki is often gifted with deep respect to honour a person’s mana, strength, and journey.

And even now, many people feel drawn to the Hei Toki during seasons where life is asking them to stand more firmly in themselves.

Not loud strength.
Not force.

Anchored strength.

The kind that is felt quietly in the way someone carries themselves.

The way they lead.
The way they protect the people around them.
The way they continue forward even when life feels heavy.

To me, a meaningful taonga has always been far more than something beautiful to wear.

It becomes part of your story.

A reminder of where you’ve come from, what you carry, and the direction you’re continuing to carve forward into.

Stand firm.

I’d love to know - have you ever felt unexpectedly drawn to a particular piece before?

When was the last time a taonga quietly pulled at your attention?

Not because it matched an outfit.
Not because it was simply beautiful.
But because something about it felt meaningful.

Across many Māori traditions, pounamu is treasured as taonga carrying depth, meaning, connection, and story.

It carries mana.
It carries wairua.
It carries connection - to whenua, to whakapapa, to the hands that shaped it, and to the person it will journey with.

For many, pounamu is gifted with aroha.

For others, a particular piece may seem to call at the right moment.

Either way, the connection matters.

The intention matters.

The story matters.

Because the pieces we wear close to our skin, often become part of how we move through the world.

A quiet anchor.
A reminder.

A companion through seasons of change, courage, protection, love, and becoming.

And sometimes, the women who spend so much time choosing for everyone else, need a moment to pause too.

To feel.
To reconnect.
To choose with intention, not urgency.

The right taonga has a way of finding the right person.

Whether gifted with aroha or chosen through deep connection, it becomes part of the story from that moment forward.

Remember yourself too.

For the women who gave, even when no one saw it.

The women who held everything together.
The women who nurtured.
The women who protected.
The women who stayed soft in a world that asked them to harden.

Today is for you.

For the biological mothers.
The stepmothers.
The bonus mums.
The aunties.
The grandmothers.
The women who became safe spaces for children who weren’t biologically theirs.

For the women longing to become mothers.
For the women who have experienced loss, miscarriage, or heartbreak along the journey.
For the women carrying silent grief while still showing up for everyone around them.

For the teachers.
The mentors.
The guides.
The women whose love, wisdom, and care have shaped lives in ways they may never fully realise.

Motherhood is not always defined by biology.
Sometimes it is defined by presence.
By nurturing.
By sacrifice.
By the way someone makes others feel safe, seen, and deeply loved.

Today, we honour that.

We hope you are being held gently today.

Spoiled.
Appreciated.

Wrapped in love by your whānau and the people around you.

And if no one has told you lately:

What you give matters.
Who you are matters.

The love you carry leaves a legacy far beyond what you can see.

Happy Mother’s Day, beautiful wāhine ♥️

There’s always a moment.

You pick something up and something shifts.

You don’t always know why.

But you feel it.

And that’s usually the piece that stays.

If you’ve felt this before you’ll understand.

Sometimes the piece that calls to you arrives exactly when you need it most...

There are moments in life when everything begins to shift.

A quiet turning point.
A closing chapter.

The subtle sense that something new is unfolding.

Often during these moments, people find themselves drawn to a particular piece of pounamu without quite knowing why.

At the gallery, I hear this often:

“I don’t know why… but this one is calling to me.”

More often than not, that pull arrives during times of transition. One design in particular carries a beautiful meaning for these moments - the Porowhita.

In te ao Māori, the Porowhita represents the circle of life. A shape with no beginning and no end.

It symbolises the understanding that life moves in cycles, not straight lines.

Every ending carries the seed of a beginning.

Every new chapter grows from something that came before.

Many people feel drawn to the Porowhita during times of transition:

• Stepping into a new phase of life
• Closing an important chapter
• Deepening connections with whānau
• Remembering that life moves in seasons, not straight lines

Pounamu carries mana and wairua, and is considered taonga - treasured objects that hold meaning and symbolism far beyond their beauty.

If you feel drawn to the Porowhita, it may simply be reflecting where you are in your own journey.

This is the kind of piece that brings you back to yourself - when life pulls you in every direction.

Some stones carry dramatic energy.

Agate offers something quieter.

Formed slowly within volcanic rock, Agate develops its layered patterns over thousands, sometimes millions, of years.

Because of this slow formation process, it has long been associated with:

• Stability
• Grounding
• Emotional resilience
• Steady strength

Agate reminds us that meaningful growth often happens quietly beneath the surface.

Much like the slower rhythm of autumn itself.
