They said she was proud.

That was the first lie.

It started with a simple moment… the kind that means nothing to outsiders but everything to the person living it. She walked into the room, quiet as always, minding her business. No extra smile. No unnecessary greeting. Just… her.

And somehow, that was enough.

“She thinks she’s better than everyone.”

The whispers didn’t come loudly. No. They never do. They crept in between side glances, muted laughter, and conversations that stopped the moment she got close. At first, she ignored it. Because how do you defend yourself against something you didn’t even do?

But then it grew.

“She’s rude.”
“She doesn’t like people.”
“She’s forming.”

Each word, small. Harmless on its own. But together? A storm.

What they didn’t see was the girl who had been disappointed too many times to be loud.
The one who had learned silence not from pride… but from pain.
The one who chose distance, not because she felt superior, but because she was tired of being misunderstood.

But nobody asked.

Nobody ever does.

They built a version of her in their minds… and started treating her like a stranger in her own life.

And the funny thing?

The more she stayed quiet to avoid drama, the more dramatic their stories about her became.

Until one day… she stopped trying.

Not because they were right.
But because explaining yourself to people who already decided who you are… is the most exhausting battle you’ll ever fight.

So she chose peace.

And they called it attitude.

Funny how people will misunderstand you… then blame you for the version of you they created.

Misconception is loud.
Truth is quiet.

And not everyone deserves to hear your side of the story.

💔

If you’ve ever been misunderstood, judged, or labeled wrongly… this is your reminder: you don’t owe everyone an explanation.

Sometimes, silence is not pride.
It’s protection.

👇 Tell me, have you ever been misunderstood before?

STORY TIME!!!

One day my neighbour came to knock on my door with that serious “abeg help me” face.

She said,
“Please, my friend is stranded. She doesn't have where to sleep tonight. Can she just manage your place for ONE night?”

I looked at her and asked the obvious question:

“Why can’t she sleep in your house?”

My neighbour said,
“Ahhh… it’s not possible. We are already five people inside one room and parlour. My mum, my dad, myself, my son and my sister. And my mum will never allow it.”

At that point I said okay… one night is not a big deal since I am familiar with the said lady.

Ladies and gentlemen…

One night became two nights.
Two nights became three nights.
Before I knew what was happening, we were approaching two weeks like a government project timeline.

But to be fair, the girl tried small. She would come late at night when I had already settled in and she always said,
“I will sleep on the floor.”

She leaves early morning like a tenant avoiding landlord.

So I said okay, no wahala.

Then one glorious day she came to me excited like someone that just won Big Brother.

She said a guy she met has a building and told her she could stay in one of the unfinished rooms.

I even supported the relocation project. I gave her one bedsheet and a mat so she can manage until she gets a mattress.

Three days later…

THREE. DAYS.

This same girl started telling people in the compound that I was gossiping about her.

Me???
The same person whose floor you were using as bedroom extension???

Mind you, my boyfriend had already been disturbing me before.

He said,
“See ehn… this girl drinks and smokes. What if she goes to a party, something happens to her, and she comes back to sleep here and doesn’t wake up? What will you tell police?”

After hearing that one, fear enter my body small.

So I told my neighbour (her friend) that I’m happy she finally found somewhere to stay and she should advise her to manage that place well and save up for her own apartment and pick up her life as Nigeria is not smiling at anybody anymore. Because if you're not careful you would be in your 30s and be wondering what you are doing with your life.

Next thing I heard…

Madam is telling people she will beat me up because I was gossiping about her.

Up till today…

I am still waiting.

I even kept one wrapper ready in case fight wants to start.

But the funniest part?

Life moved faster than her anger.

"Allegedly" before one month finished, the same person chased her out of the building. (I am honestly not sure)

Now she is roaming again looking for where to sleep.

Two days ago she saw me and said “Hi.”

I looked at her the way NEPA looks at Nigerians during heat season.

I just passed.

Because I know that “Hi” was not greeting.

That was accommodation application form.

Anyway sha…

‎I never screamed.

‎That’s the part people don’t understand.

‎If you saw us in public, you’d think I was the quiet, obedient wife. The soft one. The lucky one.

‎Abel was charming outside.
‎Articulate. Respected. The kind of man pastors praised.

‎At home?

‎He dismantled me piece by piece. 💔

‎He didn’t start with violence.
‎He started with ownership.

‎“Don’t wear that.”
‎“You don’t need to work; I can provide.”
‎“Your friends are single and bitter.”
‎“Why are you always trying to prove something?”

‎He didn’t yell often.
‎He didn’t have to.

‎His weapon was disappointment.

‎That slow exhale.
‎That look that said I was failing some invisible test.

‎The first time he called me “useless,” he apologized.

‎The second time, he justified it.

‎By the fifth time, he said it casually like it was my name.

‎But here’s the thing.

‎I wasn’t afraid of him.

‎I was studying him.

‎You see, I grew up watching my mother fight loudly. Plates breaking. Neighbors gathering. Police threats.

‎She was brave.

‎But she was also stuck.

‎I learned something different:

‎Noise keeps you emotional.
‎Silence keeps you strategic.

‎So when Able insulted me, I agreed.

‎When he mocked my intelligence, I nodded.

‎When he said I couldn’t survive without him?

‎I thanked him for “guidance.”

‎He thought he was winning.

‎What he didn’t know was that every time he underestimated me, I gained leverage.

‎I kept my small online business alive secretly.
‎I reconnected with my old university lecturer and my former employer under the disguise of checking in.
‎I opened a new bank account in my maiden name.
‎I saved screenshots. Recorded conversations. Documented everything.

‎Not because I planned revenge.

‎Because I planned freedom.

‎Then one night, he snapped.

‎Not in a dramatic movie way.

‎Just a shove.

‎But it wasn’t the pain that scared me.

‎It was the confidence in his eyes.

‎Like he believed I would stay.

‎Like he believed I had nowhere to go.

‎That night, while he slept, I stood over the bed and stared at him.

‎And I felt nothing.

‎No rage.
‎No heartbreak.
‎Just clarity.

‎He thought he had broken me.

‎He had only convinced me.

‎Two weeks later, he came home to an empty wardrobe.

‎No note.

‎Just divorce papers already filed.

‎That’s when he panicked.

‎He called me 67 times.

‎Left voice notes crying. Begging. Threatening.

‎“Why didn’t you say anything?” he kept asking.

‎I finally answered once and I said...
