🎓 Throwback: Pahang 1st Halal-STEAM Expo 2026

The First Platform in Malaysia

A proud moment as we reflect on the success of the Pahang 1st Halal-STEAM Expo 2026, a platform that brought together innovation, collaboration, and inspiration.

We are delighted to share that members of our department—Dr Noor Hasniza, Dr Nor Faezah, Dr Mohd Faez and Dr Tan Teng Ju—were part of the organising committee, contributing to the success of this meaningful event.

🧪 Dr. Tan Teng Ju and his team of Usrah In Action students conducted an engaging yogurt-making session (F.O.C.), where school students, teachers, and members of the public had the opportunity to learn how to make yogurt at home through the interactive talk and the free hands-on yogurt making session, as well as to taste the freshly prepared Greek yogurt made by the team.

Our biotechnology students also played an active role in delivering the sessions and interacting with participants, making the experience both educational and enjoyable.

This event was organised by the SunCoM Research Unit, Kulliyyah of Science, IIUM Kuantan, in collaboration with the Pahang State Government, Nestlé Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., and the Malaysian Association of Analytical Chemists.

🌱 Groundbreaking works on nickel phytomining in Sabah, featuring hyperaccumulator plants capable of thriving in extreme metal conditions.
🔬 Shared how collaborations (e.g., with Gamuda) enhanced lab capabilities with advanced tools like XRF and nanopore sequencing.
🧬 Expanded into metagenomics research
🦪 Latest study on exotic oysters first found in Muar sparked great interest among participants!

PhD Viva Success: Br. Che Muhammad Khairul Hisyam Ismail

The Department of Biotechnology, Kulliyyah of Science, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is pleased to announce the successful PhD viva of Br. Che Muhammad Khairul Hisyam Ismail, which was held on 8 January 2026.

Br. Che Muhammad Khairul Hisyam Ismail successfully defended his doctoral research entitled “Elucidating the prophylactic potential of Kelulut Honey (KH) in modulating angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as a COVID-19 target enzyme” and has been granted a Pass with Minor Revisions for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Biotechnology).

He pursued his PhD studies at the Kulliyyah of Science, IIUM, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Azlini Binti Ismail as Main Supervisor, with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azzmer Azzar Bin Abdul Hamid (Kulliyyah of Science) and Dr. Mohd Ridzuan Bin Mohd Abd Razak (Institute for Medical Research) as Co-Supervisors.

The thesis was examined by a panel of three examiners:

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Razauden bin Mohamed Zulkifli (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia)

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh and
warm New Year greetings,

On behalf of the Department of Biotechnology, I would like to extend my heartfelt New Year wishes for 2026 to all our lecturers, personal assistant, scientific support staff, postgraduate students, and undergraduate students.

As we enter this new year, may Allah SWT grant us barakah, clarity of purpose, and strength in unity. Let us renew our intentions (niyyah) and continue our work with excellence (ihsan), integrity, and sincerity. Indeed, lasting success is built upon discipline, trust, and reliance upon Allah.

To all our students, continue to pursue your aspirations with perseverance and responsibility, and let the pursuit of knowledge be guided by humility and purpose.

To all our lecturers, may you remain steadfast and inspired in nurturing the next generation of scientists, guiding them with wisdom, compassion, and academic rigor.

To all our PA and scientific support staff, you are the enablers of our mission—your commitment and professionalism are vital to the smooth functioning and continued success of the department.
