A gemologist is the technical authority on what a stone is. Through training and laboratory methodology, a gemologist identifies gemstones and diamonds, evaluates authenticity and quality characteristics such as color, clarity, cut and treatments. Their work is rooted in gemology the science of materials.
A jewellery appraiser, however, determines what a gemstone or jewellery piece is worth in a specific market context. This includes valuation for insurance replacement, resale, estate distribution, collateral or legal matters. Appraisal requires market research, valuation methodology and documentation standards.
A qualified appraiser typically combines formal gemological credentials (often a Graduate Gemologist or equivalent) with structured appraisal training and membership in a recognized professional organization. While many appraisers are trained gemologists, not all gemologists are appraisers. Identifying a gemstone and assigning it a defensible monetary value are related but distinct competencies.
Understanding this difference means knowing whether you are paying for identification expertise, valuation accuracy or both before making a significant purchase.
