On 7 May 2026, AMCHAM hosted its workforce-focused symposium, “From Compliance to Competitiveness: Malaysia’s Path to a Future-Ready Workforce.” The event convened policymakers, industry leaders, and business executives to examine Malaysia’s labor progress, share actionable solutions, and discuss the continued vigilance required to remain globally competitive.

The symposium opened with impactful remarks by Tan Sri Datuk Dr Rebecca Sta Maria, who emphasized the growing importance of integrity, transparency, and responsible labor practices in business operations. She highlighted how workforce treatment increasingly affects not only employees, but also investors, customers, supply chains, and broader stakeholder confidence.

The first panel explored developments in employment rights, social protection, and workforce transformation, while examining how Malaysia can sustain momentum in raising labor standards. The discussion featured Puan Betty Hasan, (Department of Labour Peninsular Malaysia); Trishelea Ann Sandosam (Wong & Partners); and Jaya Singam Rajoo (Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, Malaysia), moderated by Hasnul Nadzrin Shah (AMCHAM).

The second panel focused on strengthening migrant worker protection and advancing inclusive growth. Featuring Evie van Uden of IOM - UN Migration, Adrian Pereira from the North South Initiative and Harinder Jeet Kaur from YTY Group, moderated by Hafizin Tajudin of BowerGroupAsia, the session underscored that protecting migrant workers is both a moral responsibility and a business imperative. Panelists shared practical approaches and best practices for addressing labor risks, improving worker welfare, and strengthening operational resilience.

The third panel examined the importance of supply chain transparency in maintaining global market access, particularly as international scrutiny on forced labor intensifies. Speakers discussed risk-based due diligence, supplier mapping, traceability, audit readiness, and evolving import controls. The panel featured Balan Shanmuganathan of Seagate, Dato’ Nachiappan Suppiah of Sitics Logistic Solutions, and Masni Muhammad of Malaysian Investment Development Authority - MIDA, moderated by Hafidzi Razali of Strategic Counsel.

As Malaysia continues to strengthen its role within global value chains, the ability to translate labor standards into long-term strategy will remain critical. AMCHAM extends its sincere appreciation to Tan Sri Datuk Dr Rebecca Sta Maria, all speakers, partners, and guests for contributing to this important dialogue. Special thanks to Rapiscan Systems, WD, and YTY Industries for their partnership and support in making this symposium possible.

On 29 April, AMCHAM hosted a Spotlight Session featuring a closed-door briefing with Hans Vriens, Founder and Managing Partner of Vriens & Partners, on the evolving geopolitical landscape.

At a time of increasing global complexity, from shifting trade policies to ongoing conflicts, the session provided timely insights into how these developments are shaping business decisions, supply chains, and regional dynamics.

Hans shared his perspectives on how governments across Southeast Asia are responding to geopolitical pressures, including U.S. tariffs and broader global tensions, and what this means for companies operating in the region. He highlighted the growing divergence across the Southeast Asian markets, with some countries increasingly well-positioned for growth due to policy direction, investment flows and strategic alignment within global supply chains.

The discussion also touched on the structural realities businesses face today, particularly the difficulty of relocating supply chains, and how this is reinforcing the importance of strengthening existing regional ecosystems. It also explored how businesses can position themselves in an increasingly multipolar world, as well as which markets in Southeast Asia are best placed for long-term growth.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A, allowing participants to explore key concerns and strategic considerations.

AMCHAM extends its appreciation to Hans Vriens for an insightful and highly valuable discussion.
