Creative works by Ben Rongen
Where history meets contemporary aesthetics
" Own A Piece of History " Ben was first switched on to Sten and his work among the wrecks of the South China Sea while filming a documentary about the Maritime trade and 9 shipwrecks discovered by Sten. Ben has a true passion for the

historic porcelain and its hand painted motives. He brings new life to these 400 year old ceramics shards by creating a range of jewelry from them. This he says, allows everyone to own and wear a piece of history. Ben Rongen was the founding director of Ming Blue and White Sdn.Bhd. He was the creator …and founder of Tradewind Treasures Artifact Jewelry product line, with his concept, designs and the actual cutting of the ceramics. Ben has created a new brand this year with goes by his name [ BEN RONGEN- Historic Artifact Jewelry] with the concept being… From 400 year old Shards to Chic. Each piece of jewelry has a serial number and a certificate of authenticity to verify that all pieces are from the Wanli shipwreck dated 1625.

With excitement and anticipation, I will be departing for Shanghai and Qingdao the day after tomorrow.
This journey includes a visit to the archaeological station of the “Changjiangkou No.2 Ancient Ship” in Shanghai to learn more about China’s recent underwater archaeology and ancient ship preservation efforts. I will then continue to to conduct lectures and exchange sessions with students and faculty members from the Cultural Relics Conservation and Restoration Department, as well as donate several pieces of Wanli Ship porcelain for research and educational purposes.
I hope this legendary heritage from the Maritime Silk Road can once again reconnect with China and inspire a new generation of cultural and artistic practitioners.

When millennia-old Miao silver meets four-hundred-year-old blue-and-white porcelain,
one carries the warmth of highland craftsmanship,
the other, fragments of history once resting in the depths of the South China Sea—
now, in this moment, they are brought together,
reassembled into a light that belongs to our time.

From Vancouver to Singapore,
then from Singapore to Penang…
A simple, unplanned step into Coex
was how we met.
On the way to the airport,
you made a special stop at our home gallery,
lingering for a moment among the blue and white.
Some encounters are brief,
yet just right. ✨

This is a Late Ming Wanli period (c. 1590–1600) Kraak porcelain bowl, produced in Jingdezhen, likely from the Guanyinge kilns. It is thinly potted with an everted foliate rim, and decorated with typical Kraak panels, featuring birds in waterside landscapes and a bird perched on a rock at the center.
Such bowls were recorded in the archives of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as “Cameelscoppen” (Camel-Cups), and were earlier referred to as “Kraaikop” (Crow Cups). Archaeological fragments have also been found at kiln sites in Jingdezhen, with documentation appearing in 17th-century European trade records.
A few similar examples were recovered from the Wanli shipwreck (C1625), though most were found broken. Ben Rongen Brand has transformed some of these fragments into jewellery, allowing these pieces of 400-year-old history to be worn and remembered in a new form. One wonders which fortunate collector now carries this fragment of the past.

From the Ming Dynasty to Europe,
across four centuries of time—
now, this touch of blue and white can be yours.
The motif on the Wanli Double Deer Plate symbolizes “double blessings of fortune and prosperity.”
, a homophone for rank and wealth, represents status and success; paired together, they signify harmony and auspiciousness.
More than just a beautiful design,
this piece carries a 400-year-old blessing of abundance and longevity.

A Touch of Blue and White:
Europe’s Ultimate Status Symbol
In the 17th century,
Europe’s elite desired not gold,
but Chinese blue-and-white porcelain.
A touch of blue and white,
traveling across the Maritime Silk Road,
symbolized status, taste, and power.
Four centuries later,
it resurfaces from the South China Sea.
To own it is to own a piece of history.
