What is the difference between Zambian emeralds and Colombian emeralds?
Although both are considered top-tier in the emerald world, they each have their own unique characteristics.
Colombian emeralds are known for their “warm green” color—a rich, vivid green tone. They are high in chromium and low in iron, which allows them to display a slightly reddish glow under sunlight, making them appear more vibrant and lively.
Zambian emeralds, on the other hand, have a “cooler tone.” Their color tends to be bluish-green. Due to higher iron content, their color is often deeper, darker, and more intense.
When it comes to clarity and internal characteristics, Zambian emeralds are generally more eye-clean compared to Colombian emeralds. They tend to have a more solid crystal structure with fewer visible inclusions.
Colombian emeralds commonly contain natural inclusions known as “Jardin” (meaning “garden”). Gemologists often identify Colombian emeralds by observing “three-phase inclusions,” which consist of solid, liquid, and gas elements within the stone.
In terms of hardness and durability, Zambian emeralds—because of their higher iron content—are typically more durable and less prone to chipping. They also respond better to oil treatments.
Colombian emeralds, however, have a softer structure. If they are treated with oil, they require more careful handling and maintenance.
Why is there a price difference?
In the market, Colombian emeralds are generally more expensive than Zambian emeralds. This is largely due to their long-standing reputation as the finest emeralds in the world, built over centuries.
High-quality Colombian emeralds with the so-called “neon green” color are rare and highly sought after.
Additionally, Colombian emeralds are traditionally favored in international auctions, which further increases their value.
In summary:
– If you prefer clean clarity and fewer inclusions, Zambian emeralds are a great choice.
– If you want prestige and a vibrant, glowing green color, Colombian emeralds are the better option.
With that, I’ll conclude this video.
