OUR STORY
Mohammed Hussein Sheikh was born in 1923, in Darnah city, which is located in the eastern part of Libya. Darnah is blessed with freshwater wells, moderate weather and is known for its contribution to science, commerce and arts. At the time, Libya was ruled by the Italians and growing up in Darnah, Mohammed Sheikh studied in the then-Italian schooling system, learnt the Holy Quran by heart and studied Arabic in the local mosques. Together with a few childhood friends, he also learnt English. Later, as a young man, and still during the Italian occupation of Libya, Mohammed Sheikh worked with an Italian lawyer and learned typewriting; in addition, he mastered written and spoken Italian. After World War II, a part of which was fought in Libya. and the resulting triumphant entrance of Allied troops to Libya in 1941, public service in Darnah witnessed a new kind of stability, with Mohammed Sheikh later working in the government's Provision Department (as daily commodities were issued to people by ration cards at that time). Political life played a big role in Darnah, and especially the local Omar Al Mokhtar Association, which played an important role in the life of the young men of the city. During this period. Libya was governed by the British, and in order to dissuade any political activity that could affect their rule they dispersed the young men of Darnah to different parts of Libya. Thus, as a young man, Mohammed Sheikh found himself transferred to Benghazi, located some 300 kilometers from Darnah. Even though he was married and had a daughter, he had to leave his family in Darnah tor a long time while he worked in Benghazi for the Provision Department. In 1946, Mohammed Sheikh corresponded with a Swiss watch company called Minerva, from whom he ordered two watches, from their factory in Switzerland. The money for the watches was transferred by post and the watches were received in the same manner. During this period, Mohammed Sheikh had a close friend, named AI Salheen bensaoud. a well-mannered, and honest young man. They had studied together in a mosque, where they learnt Arabic and the Holy Quran. Mohammed Sheikh asked Al Salheen bensaoud to bring him watches and clocks from the British Army to service and fix, as Mohammed Sheikh had a talent for fixing such mechanical objects. This unique partnership continued for two years, until 1948, when they agreed to jointly establish a company they called “AI Salheen bin Masoud and Mohammed Sheikh" to import watches to Libya
