Mogok Ruby Mining Area Collection~

No matter how careful the washing process is, some gemstones are inevitably overlooked in the discarded rocks—these are known as tailings. The tailings from Mogok rubies consist of marble and calcite. According to local tradition, the residents have the right to search through these tailings and keep any gemstones they find. During the British mining era, this activity was restricted to women in an effort to reduce theft. Even today, you can still see these women meticulously sorting through the tailings at the mines and selling the fruits of their labor in the open gemstone markets.

Gem Hunters on Pakistan's Swat River |||**
In Pakistan's Himalayan mining area, locals line the riverbanks washing raw emerald stones. Sack after sack of rocks bought from the mines pile up on shore 🧺💎

Watching them scrub stone after stone? Finding gem-quality emeralds here feels like hitting the Powerball jackpot—literally lottery-level odds! 😳 The silent river flows, reflecting their stoic faces. 🙏

(Hand Mining)

The tunnels echoed with the rumbling of machinery, the path was dark the whole way, breathing felt difficult, and the damp smell of earth filled the air. Conditions were exceptionally tough because of the manual labor involved.

Emeralds are painstakingly chiseled out with tools, and this muddy cave is where the freshly unearthed Swat emeralds are kept.

𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿
Every miner emerging from a tunnel is thoroughly checked for hidden raw emeralds.

An ordinary worker in Pakistan earns just 110–140 USD a month.
Hard-earned money, indeed…

Even in such harsh, demanding conditions, bright and innocent smiles pierce through the grim tones—like a ray of light in the valley. 💚

😀After a 3-hour drive from Beruwela, we arrived at this small, private mine in Ratnapura owned by a friend. There aren't many workers here. It was drizzling, but the miners were still hard at work – day in, day out, just trying to make a living. They greeted us incredibly warmly when we arrived, one by one saying hello and encouraging me to film them.

We watched them dig earth that contains blue sapphires from the pits. They passed it along bucket-brigade style to form small piles nearby. Apparently, they collect like this for about 5-10 days before doing a big wash to find the gems.🥹

**Today, I'm taking you inside the mysterious gemstone mines of Sri Lanka! ✨**

📍 Location & Environment
Sri Lanka's main gem mining areas are in the south and central regions – they’re the biggest gem mines in Asia! Think mountainous areas, tons of rivers... picture all these incredible gemstones hidden amidst green hills and flowing water. 💎 Super cool, right? But honestly? The mining spots themselves are totally primitive. Mother Nature makes digging stuff up kinda tough!

⛏️ Let's Talk Digging (Mining Operations!)

How They Do It: There are two main ways: open-pit (digging near the surface) and underground (going deep!). Open-pit is straightforward – you're basically scratching the surface looking for gems. Underground? Way more complicated. Think digging deep tunnels to find the gems hidden way down below.
Tools? Seriously super basic. We're talking pickaxes, shovels... the old-school stuff. Deep down in the mine shafts? Miners sometimes just use a candle to check if there’s any oxygen left! The conditions are super tough. 😭
Working Conditions: Open-pit means baking in the sun all day. Underground? Forget it – it’s dark, damp, stuffy, sometimes not enough air... oh, and bloodsuckers (think leeches!) Sometimes the mine tunnels cave in. Safety? Yeah... not so great.
Workload? It’s intense. Miners work crazy long hours. Imagine crouching or squeezing through tiny, cramped tunnels for hours digging? Totally backbreaking work.
💎 The Gemstone Marketplace Scene
This all happens in Ratnapura, the gem city. Its main market is a bunch of crowded pedestrian streets. When trading kicks off? It's packed! 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 You get the big-deal gem traders, the cutters... and also street vendors trying to sell stones to tourists. Mostly, it’s raw gems changing hands here. Buying anything? You really need to know your stuff or have some solid experience... otherwise, you could totally end up with a rip-off.

🔨 From Rough Stone to Sparkle (Gem Cutting!)
Check out the pics! Workers use kinda simple tools and equipment to carefully cut and polish the gems. That dazzling sparkle? ✨ It's 100% down to their serious skill and a whole lot of painstaking work. Turning a rough rock into a finished gem? It’s a total glow-up!

So that's the real deal at Sri Lanka's gem mines! Every single gem you see? It comes from a mix of nature’s amazing gifts and some seriously hard work by miners and artisans. 💦 If you ever get the chance? You gotta go see this unique world for yourself!
